What to do if Lithops burst due to excessive water

The reason why Lithops bursts

Overwatering

Lithops often burst in winter, the main reason being watering. But some people may wonder why the plants burst in winter when they are watered in spring and autumn. Think about the environment in South Africa. Winter is the long dry season in South Africa and water is quite scarce. Lithops are adapted to this dry environment in their bones. If you water too much, it will not only cause the stone to crack, but in serious cases it will affect the shedding of the skin in late winter and early spring. The old skin of the stone that has absorbed water will take a long time to shed, causing the new plants to miss the growing season.

Insufficient light

The sunlight is weak in winter, and most areas except the south do not have sufficient light. If there is too much watering and insufficient light, the water will be concentrated in the belly of the Lithops, and bursting is normal!

Improper molting operation

In late winter and early spring, Lithops will begin to prepare to shed its skin in order to adapt to the environment and grow new leaves. At this time, as long as Lithops carries out material exchange within its own body, we can't help much, and it doesn't need a lot of water. If you water the plant suddenly before molting, the new leaves will grow rapidly and push open the old leaves. The new and old leaves squeeze each other, and in severe cases, double-layer bursting may occur.

What to do if Lithops bursts

Water cut

Some lithops will go into a short dormancy in winter and do not require a lot of water. Actually, it’s just two words: “water cut”. Just make sure the soil in the pot does not dry out and crack. Controlling moisture is the main measure to prevent Lithops from breaking.

Ensure a relatively stable environment

Lithops are highly adaptable. Lithops that have been cultivated for 2 to 3 years can adapt well to the home environment and your cultivation methods. If they are consistently watered and the room temperature is relatively stable, it is recommended not to reduce water or lower the temperature in winter, and just maintain them normally.

Wait for drying

Don't worry if Lithops have already burst. Lithops has a strong healing ability. Put the plant in a cool place, use less water, and wait for it to recover slowly.
