Disease and Pest Control for Brussels Sprouts

Disease and Pest Control for Brussels Sprouts

1. Symptoms of illness

Black rot is a disease caused by bacteria invading the vascular bundle of the plant, mainly harming its leaves and bulbils. When the true leaves are infected, the leaf edges usually appear as "V"-shaped spots with yellow halos on the edges. The spots can expand to the sides or inward, causing the leaf flesh to gradually turn yellow or die. When the humidity is high, the small bud balls gradually rot from the bottom to the top and turn dark brown.

When leaves are infected with black rot, the cotyledons appear in a waterlogged state. If it continues to spread, it can reach the true leaves and gradually develop, causing the veins to turn black and necrotize. If the pathogen spreads to the stem and roots, it will cause the vascular bundles to turn black.

2. Causes of illness

The pathogen attaches to the seeds, and when it enters the plant through the water holes or wounds on the edge of the true leaves of the seedlings, it can easily cause necrosis of the seedlings. The pathogen is usually very easy to infect them and cause disease under conditions of high temperature, more insects, continuous cropping for many years, early sowing, improper cultivation methods, improper fertilization and watering, and waterlogging.

3. Disease prevention and control

Based on these reasons, the following prevention and control methods can be adopted: (1) Disinfect seeds and seedbeds before sowing to avoid the presence of pathogenic bacteria. (2) It is also possible to grow crops that were free of the disease in the previous year. (3) Carry out field management such as tillage and weeding in a timely manner, and promptly detect and remove infected diseased plants. At the same time, maintain sufficient light and good ventilation. (4) Spraying with pesticides: 60% Duofu diluted 500 times can be used for spraying. Different agents can also be used for alternate spraying.

4. Pest Control

Several types of insects that often appear on Brussels sprouts are cabbage worms, budworms, etc. These pests can be prevented in time before they appear. Once the insects are found, they must be removed immediately.
