Disease and Pest Control of Gleditsia sinensis

Disease and Pest Control of Gleditsia sinensis

Diseases

Generally speaking, there are not many diseases, so I will only talk about one here. It's called "rust, and it can occur on many legumes. After infection, yellow spots appear on the leaves of the plant. As the disease progresses, the spots gradually become one piece. From a distance, it looks like rust. To treat this disease, we can use 50% carboxyl spray, once a week or ten days. About three sprays will produce obvious results.

Pests

The first pest is called "Soapberry Bean Weevil". From the name, you can tell that this insect mainly harms this plant. The adult is approximately 5.5 to 7.5 mm long, 1.5 to 3.5 mm wide, and is reddish brown in color. This pest has one generation every year. The larvae will overwinter inside the seeds, then bite through the seeds and drill out in the spring of the following year. They will then continue to lay eggs on the seeds, and the larvae will enter the seeds again after hatching. To deal with this kind of pest, we can use fumigation agents, or directly soak them in 90-degree hot water for about half a minute to kill the pests in the seeds.

The second pest is the "heartworm". Its larvae spin cocoons inside pods or in cracks and overwinter. It may have three generations each year, the first in early April, the second in late June, and the third in mid-to-late July. To deal with this kind of insect, we can choose to treat the pods in late autumn or early spring of the following year to prevent the overwintering insects from continuing to grow. We need to carefully check each pod, find out which ones are infected, and then deal with them.
