Disease and Pest Control of Dendrobium densiflorum

Disease and Pest Control of Dendrobium densiflorum

Common types of pests and diseases

There are probably two common diseases of this plant. The first is black spot disease, which is more common in early summer. As the name suggests, it can cause dark black spots to appear on the leaves of plants. In severe cases, many black spots will connect together, eventually causing the leaves to wither and fall off. The second is anthracnose, which can occur from January to May. Leaves affected by this disease will have black or brown spots, which is somewhat similar to the first disease, but there are differences upon closer observation.

The main insect pest is an insect called "Philippine shield scale". This pest will parasitize on the back or edges of the plant leaves, and then they will slowly suck the juice from the leaves. Over time, it will cause the leaves to slowly turn yellow or fall off. Even worse, it will cause the death of the entire plant. It cannot be ignored. This pest is mainly common in late May because this is the peak period for its reproduction and hatching.

Prevention and treatment methods

For the first disease, we generally use Bordeaux mixture (ratio 1:1:150) for prevention and control. Of course, a thousand times more potent medicine solution can also be used.

For the second disease, we use a thousand times solution of carbendazim (50% concentration) or a thousand times solution of thiophanate-methyl (50% concentration) for spraying. Two to three times will be enough.

To deal with pests, it depends on the situation. If the number is relatively small, you can use the method of cutting off diseased and old branches and burning them in a concentrated manner for prevention and control. However, if the number is large, medicine will be necessary.
