Causes of cactus root rot

Causes of cactus root rot

Causes of cactus root rot

1. The low temperature in winter can cause the cactus to freeze and cause root rot. In winter, the indoor temperature needs to be maintained at at least 5°C, and it should be placed on a balcony with sufficient light and long lighting hours. You can also cover it with a glass cover, and cover the entire cactus with plastic film at night to keep it warm and avoid damage.

2. The cactus can be repotted in spring and autumn. At this time, the root system of the cactus has not yet grown, so it is best to water it less or even not at all to prevent excessive watering from causing the plant to rot.

3. If the top of the cactus is concave, do not water the concave part during the hot summer season or when it is absolutely necessary, otherwise water will accumulate in the plant, leading to rot.

4. In late autumn, from October to November, you should stop fertilizing the cactus. If you continue to fertilize at this time, the cactus will grow extremely weakly. The cactus that should have entered dormancy will continue to grow, and its cold resistance is poor. It is easy to be damaged by frost in winter and cause root rot.

5. The temperature is too low in winter, so the soil in the pot should be kept dry. Excessive watering at this time will cause frostbite and root rot of the plants. Generally, water them once every 1-2 weeks.

6. The growth of cactus needs to be accompanied by repotting, which should be done once every 2-3 years. Otherwise, the growth will be poor and the root absorption capacity will be weak, causing the plant's roots to rot or grow poorly.

How to prevent cactus root rot

1. Potted cacti should be placed in a sunny place and not exposed to wind and rain. When the temperature drops to 10℃, the cactus should be placed indoors for cold protection.

2. The cactus pot should not be too large, and a breathable pot can be used.

3. The top of the cactus ball does not need to be watered, just keep the soil in the pot moist.

4. Fertilize monthly and replace the potting soil every 2 years.
