How to propagate Ophiopogon japonicus

Division propagation of Ophiopogon japonicus

Division propagation is the main method of propagating Ophiopogon japonicus.

When we use the method of division to propagate Ophiopogon japonicus, we must first select Ophiopogon japonicus plants with good growth conditions between April and May. Healthy Ophiopogon japonicus plants generally have dark green leaves. At the same time, we must observe whether the Ophiopogon japonicus plants have diseases and pests. Ophiopogon japonicus plants with diseases and pests cannot be used for division propagation.

After we select suitable Ophiopogon japonicus plants, we will shake off the soil at the roots of the dug Ophiopogon japonicus. The tuberous root part of Ophiopogon japonicus is very valuable and can be used as medicine. If Ophiopogon japonicus is planted on a large scale, its tuberous roots can be left as commodities. After cutting off the tubers, you also need to cut off the stem nodes of the Ophiopogon japonicus, leaving a length of about 0.5 cm to keep the leaves of the Ophiopogon japonicus from falling apart. If the stem nodes we leave are too long, it is easy to cultivate tall seedlings, and the tubers grown from tall seedlings are very small.

After cutting the stem nodes, we gently separate the Ophiopogon japonicus plants, which completes the division of Ophiopogon japonicus. Then we bundle the divided plants with straw, cut off the leaf tips to prevent excessive evaporation of water, and immediately plant them in the soil.

Treatment of excess Ophiopogon japonicus seedlings

If there are seedlings that cannot be planted immediately, we first soak the base of the division seedlings in water so that it can fully absorb water, and then bury it in loose sandy soil, and water the seedlings once a day or every other day. This can maintain its vitality, but it still needs to be planted in time. This method can only last for five days.
