Why does the variegated hosta rot from the roots?

Why does the variegated hosta rot from the roots?

Causes of root rot

Loose soil

Hosta is suitable for growing in sandy soil with good drainage, but sometimes the soil is too loose and has poor gelatinity, which cannot lock in nutrients. When watering, the nutrients in the water are lost along with the water, and the roots cannot get enough nutrients from the soil, causing the roots to rot over time.

Overwatering

Hosta requires more water to grow, but that doesn’t mean you need to water it more. It is best to replenish water when the hosta needs water. If you water too much, the hosta will not be able to absorb the water and its roots will be soaked in water, causing root rot.

Fungal damage

Non-human causes, bacterial infection. The soil was not disinfected during planting, dead branches and leaves were not cleaned up in time, and the growth environment of the hosta was too humid, all of which are extremely conducive to the growth of bacteria. Bacteria breed and cause root rot.

Treatment

Take the hosta out of the pot, remove the rotten parts of the roots, let it dry naturally (do not put it in the sun), and change the soil directly. It is recommended to use a mixture of sandy soil and culture soil, which is both nutritious and has good drainage.

Watering should be timely and appropriate. Depending on the climate, the frequency of watering should be increased appropriately in summer. Water when the soil is dry and avoid water accumulation.

Spray with fungicide. It is too late to spray the fungicide when the plant is found to be diseased, so it is necessary to spray it in advance. In summer or in a relatively humid environment, spray once every two months to sterilize in time.
