Reasons and solutions for Milan not blooming

Milan is known for its rich floral scent, and just by growing one at home, you can fill the entire room with its aroma. Summer is the peak flowering period of Milan. Because it likes high temperatures, and the higher the temperature, the more vigorously it grows and the stronger its flowering performance, summer becomes its most prosperous flowering season. However, some flower lovers find that their Milan only grows branches but does not bloom. Let’s learn about the reasons and solutions for Milan not blooming.

1. Don’t prune

Milan blooms in a similar way to other plants, with the flower buds growing at the top of the branches. As long as the branches grow normally, they will continue to form flower buds at the top. If you prune it now, it will need to grow new branches again, and the new branches will not bloom until they are 5-10 cm long. Therefore, if you want Milan to bloom normally in summer, you must stop pruning, otherwise you will not see flowers for at least two months.

2. Don’t lack light

As a flowering plant, Milan needs sufficient light, especially as a strong sun-loving flower , its daily light time should not be less than six hours. The daylight hours are long in summer. If Milan lacks light, it will only grow branches but not bloom. In severe cases, it will cause excessive growth and leaf fall. Therefore, it should be placed in the sun immediately to ensure its normal growth and flowering.

3. Don’t be short of fat

Milan's growth and flowering require the support of fertilizer . If no fertilizer is applied in summer, the plants will become stunted, the leaves will turn yellow and fall off in large numbers, all of which are caused by insufficient fertilizer. In order to keep Milan blooming continuously and have a strong fragrance, you must choose the correct fertilizer, preferably one with a high phosphorus content and balanced other elements, such as the common Huaduoduo No. 2.

Phosphorus fertilizer helps flower bud differentiation, nitrogen fertilizer ensures branch growth, and potassium fertilizer promotes root development. Therefore, choose suitable fertilizer and apply it two to three times a month, paying attention to the concentration not being too high to ensure the normal growth and flowering of Milan. When there is enough fertilizer, the fragrance of the flowers will be stronger.

4. Don’t be short of water

As a woody plant, Milan is relatively drought-resistant, but it consumes a lot of water during its growth and flowering. If there is a lack of water, its capillary roots will dry up, causing problems with new branches or leaves, such as leaf fall or terminal bud dieback.

During the maintenance process, sufficient moisture must be ensured. In a well-ventilated environment, when the soil is half dry, water it thoroughly in time. If ventilation is poor, wait until the soil is more than half dry or almost dry before watering. Try to place Milan in a well-ventilated place so that it is easier to control watering.

Milan is a plant that blooms all year round. As long as the ambient temperature remains above 15 degrees, it can grow and bloom normally even in high temperatures. If your milan plant isn't blooming, following these guidelines will ensure it continues to bloom and fill your home with floral scents.
