How to grow pennywort hydroponically so that its leaves grow big enough to fill the pot?

The pennywort is a common indoor foliage plant. Its round leaves resemble coins, are highly ornamental, and have strong vitality. Its most important characteristic is that it likes a humid environment, so it is very suitable for hydroponic cultivation. So how do you grow pennywort hydroponically so that its leaves grow big enough to fill the pot? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Temperature management

It is best to place the hydroponic pennywort in a ventilated and diffused light environment and ensure that the temperature is between 16-24℃. Please note that the pennywort is very afraid of cold. If the temperature is below 5℃, it will be frozen and die. If the indoor temperature is relatively low in winter, you can make a cover to cover the pot, pour out the water and keep it moist.

2. Ensure lighting

The pennywort prefers an environment with sufficient light and grows well under full-sun conditions. In half-sun conditions, its petiole will be longer and grow toward the light. The posture needs to be slightly adjusted to be more beautiful. Therefore, it is best to allow it to receive 4-6 hours of diffuse sunlight every day, and lights can be used instead indoors.

3. Add fertilizer

The pennywort can produce the nutrients it needs for growth through its own photosynthesis, so only a small amount of fertilizer is needed . For hydroponic pennywort, it is generally recommended to use water-soluble fertilizers, and plant nutrient solution can be applied directly. Use it once a month, and the concentration should not be too high. When using, be sure not to pour the fertilizer water on the leaves.

4. Water quality management

The water quality requirements of the pennywort are not very high, so just choose ordinary tap water and treat it overnight. However, when growing pennywort in water, you should pay attention to changing the water frequently. Generally, you should change the water every 3-4 days in summer, and the water level should be about half of the bottle. In winter, change the water once a week. Since the leaves evaporate less in winter, it is usually sufficient to change 1/3 of the bottle each time.

5. Proper pruning

The pennywort grows very fast during its growth period and can quickly fill the pot. At this time, it is necessary to remove the yellow and dead leaves in time to avoid the branches being too dense and the leaves blocking each other and affecting the amount of light. Prune the overly tall leaves to encourage new branches to sprout from the base of the stems and leaves. In addition, when the pot is full of roots, it is necessary to trim the roots in time, repot or divide the plants for shaping.

5. Mosquito control

One trouble with hydroponic pennywort is that it is prone to insects, especially in the summer when the temperature is high and mosquitoes are rampant. Therefore, in addition to changing the water frequently, you can also mix the carbendazim solution with water when changing the water. The concentration should be between 0.1% and 0.2%, and then spray it on the plants or in the water, which can have a good preventive effect.

In general, the maintenance of hydroponic pennywort is not difficult to master. Basically, if you do the above points well, you can keep the plant evergreen and full of vitality all the year round, and easily achieve the effect of blooming the pot.
