Jasmine cultivation and pruning methods

Jasmine cultivation and pruning methods

Jasmine is loved by flower lovers for its fragrant aroma and elegant flower shape, and it can bloom many times throughout the year. In order to keep jasmine in good growth condition and abundant flowering, daily maintenance and pruning are very important. Let’s learn how to grow and prune jasmine.

1. Pruning time

Spring to Winter: Pruning is mainly done during the spring and autumn growing seasons. The first pruning is around the Qingming Festival, before the jasmine sprouts; the second pruning is after the flowering period ends, around August or September.

Dormant period: Prune once in late winter or early spring to keep the plant healthy.

2. Pruning steps

First pruning during the growing season: Combine it with repotting, dig out the plant, remove the old soil, and cut off the overly dense fibrous roots.

Prune after the flowers fade: remove some leaves to reduce nutrient loss, keep 3-5 nodes on each branch, and cut off the top to promote the growth of new branches.

Pruning during the dormant period: Cut off diseased and weak branches, thin branches and overgrown branches, shorten the tops of annual branches, and keep 10-15 cm of the lower branches.

3. Notes

Newly purchased jasmine: After repotting, cut off all flower buds and flower buds to help the plant adapt to the new environment.

Importance of pruning: Do not ignore the role of pruning. Prune cleanly and neatly to avoid rough cuts. The axillary buds retained should not be too long so as not to affect the growth of new buds.

Cutting utilization: The pruned branches can be used for cuttings. Keep two leaves on each branch and cut off half of the leaves. The buds in the middle should grow well.

4. Add fertilizer

After flowering: Jasmine needs to be supplemented with fertilizer in time after flowering to make up for the nutrients consumed by flowering. The first fertilization should be a balanced fertilizer of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to promote plant recovery and new branch growth.

Germination period: After about 10 days, jasmine begins to grow rapidly and form flower buds. At this time, potassium dihydrogen phosphate should be used instead, applied once every 10 days for two consecutive times to promote the expansion of the flower buds.

Before flowering: When the flower buds grow large and are close to flowering, stop fertilizing until the flowers bloom.

5. Watering problem

Outdoor maintenance: Water evaporates quickly in summer, so jasmine flowers maintained outdoors need to keep the soil moist and water them basically once a day.

Indoor maintenance: Indoor ventilation conditions are limited, so the principle of "don't water unless the plant is dry, and water thoroughly when you do" should be followed to avoid excessive moisture that may cause excessive growth or root rot.

Watering method: You can water the leaves by spraying, but avoid spraying on the flower buds.

6. Lighting issues

Light requirements: Jasmine likes plenty of sunlight, and more sunlight every day will help it bloom.

Growing period: After flowering, jasmine can be placed in a semi-shaded or diffusely lighted place for about half a month to allow its branches to grow fully.

Flowering period: Then move to a place with good light. Jasmine blooms best in the temperature range of 18 to 30 degrees, especially 22 to 28 degrees, which helps the flowers to be lush and fragrant.

In short, to grow jasmine well, pruning and maintenance are both very important. Pruning jasmine is a technical job, but novices can quickly master it through practice. The key is diligent pruning and careful care.
