What to do if the leaves of bamboo palm turn yellow

What to do if the leaves of bamboo palm turn yellow

The reason why leaves turn yellow

Too much light

The leaves of the brown bamboo are emerald green, but they cannot withstand direct sunlight. During the maintenance process, if the light is too strong, the moisture in the leaves will evaporate quickly, causing the leaves to turn yellow and the leaf tips to dry out.

Workaround

The bamboo palm likes shade and should be placed in a sunny place, any corner of the living room, but try to avoid direct sunlight. For leaves that turn yellow due to excessive light, you can cut off the yellowed parts. After the plant grows new leaves, you can cut off the entire leaf. This will not affect the appearance.

The second reason for the leaves turning yellow

The soil is alkaline

The soil in most parts of the north is alkaline, but bamboo palm likes to grow in slightly acidic soil. When the soil becomes alkaline, the leaves will turn yellow. In addition, when the soil of the plant is not changed for a long time, the soil lacks nutrients, the soil structure is monotonous, or even the soil becomes compacted, new roots have difficulty growing, the absorption capacity of the bamboo palm is weakened, the growth becomes poor, and the leaves will have burnt edges.

Workaround

Repot every 2 to 3 years, and replace part of the soil with new ones to ensure that the soil always has enough nutrients to supply the growth of the plant. (For detailed repotting methods, please refer to ☛ How to repot bamboo palm )

During maintenance, you can occasionally water it with some diluted vinegar water or lemon water. The concentration should be low, and it can change the acidity and alkalinity of the soil without polluting the soil. For leaves that have turned yellow, some will slowly recover after the soil becomes acidic.

The third reason for the leaves turning yellow

Improper watering

Too much or too little watering will affect the growth of the bamboo palm roots and the respiration of the plant, causing the leaves to turn yellow. Of course, when the air is too dry, the leaves will slowly turn yellow, especially the varieties with thinner leaves.

Workaround

It is necessary to control watering, neither too dry nor waterlogged. It is best if the soil in the pot is moist but not sticky. Spray water more often to ensure sufficient air humidity. If the humidity in your home can reach the same level as that in the bathroom, the bamboo palm will grow well. Spray water frequently and ventilate in time when the water is too high.

Reason 4 for yellowing leaves

Improper fertilization

If no fertilizer is applied for a long time or concentrated fertilizer is applied, the leaves of the bamboo palm will gradually turn yellow from the bottom to the top. This is because the roots are damaged and their absorption capacity is reduced. Many people think that more fertilizer will be better, but in fact, if there is too much fertilizer, the concentration will be high, which will be worse. The roots will be burned and the leaves will turn yellow.

Workaround

Apply fertilizer appropriately, and apply dilute liquid fertilizer once every 15 to 20 days during the growing season. A lower concentration is okay. Try to apply fertilizer in the evening, and water appropriately the next morning to dilute the remaining fertilizer in the potting soil. When watering with fertilizer, do not touch the leaves to avoid burns.
