Platycodon grandiflorum planting method and time

Platycodon grandiflorum is a perennial herb. It is not only a beautiful ornamental plant, but also a traditional Chinese medicinal material . Its roots are mainly used as medicine. It is currently grown in most parts of the country. So what is the planting method and time of Platycodon? Let’s learn more about it below.

Platycodon grandiflorum planting time

The sowing period can be autumn, winter or spring, but autumn sowing in September-October is better. When planting, be sure to choose fully developed, fully grown seeds of the current year that have a high germination rate, strong vitality, and few diseases and insect pests.

Platycodon grandiflorum planting method

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Choose a sandy loam field with high terrain, good drainage, deep soil, loose and fertile soil, and rich in organic matter to plant Platycodon grandiflorum. After selecting the land, deep plowing should be carried out, with the plowing depth reaching more than 30 cm. Combined with land preparation, apply sufficient base fertilizer. Generally, apply 5000 kg of soil and miscellaneous fertilizers, 25 kg of urea, 30 kg of diamine, and 20 kg of potassium sulfate per mu.

2. Seed soaking and germination

Soak the Platycodon seeds in warm water at about 40℃-50℃, stirring constantly to allow the seeds to be heated evenly. When the temperature drops to about 20℃, wash them with clean water to remove impurities. Soak for another 12 hours, or soak the seeds in 0.3% potassium permanganate solution for 12 hours, then wash, mix with appropriate amount of wet sand, pile up or wrap the seeds with wet cloth, and place at 25℃-30℃ for germination. The seeds can be sown after they turn white in about 4-5 days.

3. Sowing method

When sowing, mix Platycodon grandiflorum seeds with yellow sand in a ratio of 1:10, and then spread them evenly on the prepared bed surface. Use a rake to level it twice until the soil covers the seeds. Finally, cover with grass or sand to keep warm and moist. The seedlings will emerge in March to early April of the following year. Finally, the seedlings are transplanted at a spacing of 5-6 cm, with a sowing rate of 2-3 kg per mu. In addition, Platycodon grandiflorum can also be raised and transplanted, with about 100 kilograms of seedlings used per mu.

4. Field management

After all the seedlings have grown, timely tillage and weeding should be carried out and topdressing fertilizer should be applied to promote the healthy growth of the seedlings. And Platycodon is afraid of waterlogging, so the water should be drained immediately in rainy weather, and watered in time in dry weather. In addition, spraying 1000PPM ethephon 1-2 times during the flowering period can effectively remove flower buds and increase yield by 45%.

5. Harvesting and processing

Platycodon grandiflorum is harvested 2 or 3 years after planting, in spring and autumn. Those harvested in autumn are heavier, firmer and of better quality. It is usually dug up when the stems and leaves are withered above the ground. When picking, use a pickaxe to dig out the roots, remove the stems and leaves, shake off the soil, cut off the fibrous roots, soak in water and wash, and then go through the initial processing of removing the skin.

In general, Platycodon grandiflorum has a short growth period and quick results, making it a good business opportunity to get rich. However, many people do not master the planting methods well, which makes it difficult for seedlings to emerge and the yield cannot be increased. But basically if you do the above points well, achieving high-yield planting will not be a problem.
