Which month in spring is best for planting beans?

Green beans , also known as cowpeas, are a common vegetable . They are relatively easy to grow . In addition, they have high yields and good planting benefits, so many people want to grow them. So which month in spring is best for planting beans? Let’s learn more about it below.

Which month in spring is best for planting beans?

The time for planting beans should be chosen according to local climatic conditions and planting methods. The time for planting beans in spring is generally from March to April. At this time, the beans grow faster and can avoid the high temperature and humidity in summer, which is conducive to plant growth.

How to plant beans

1. Soil

When choosing soil for beans, it is not advisable to plant them in continuous cropping. They should be planted in sandy loam with good terrain, good drainage and near neutrality. In this kind of soil, beans grow and bear fruit very well.

2. Planting specifications

Beans can be planted in double rows and sown on demand. The spacing between plants in spring should be 12 to 15 cm. You can choose a sunny day for sowing. During field management, when the seedlings begin to sprout and reach a height of 30 cm, a trellis should be erected. The trellis types include straight fence, inverted A-shaped trellis, or cross-pit A-shaped trellis. Double-row planting generally uses an inverted V-shaped frame, which allows the flower stalks to extend out of the leaves. Maintaining good ventilation can reduce the occurrence of insect pests.

3. Fertilization

When planting beans, try to apply enough base fertilizer. It is most appropriate to choose farmyard manure. Because it often rains during the growing period of beans in spring and summer, it is inconvenient to apply top dressing, so base fertilizer should be used as the main fertilizer. Top dressing should follow the principle of preventing excessive growth of stems and leaves in the early stage and premature aging of plants in the later stage. Apply a small amount of top dressing in the seedling stage and it is not suitable to apply top dressing on rainy days. Green beans avoid moisture. Too much moisture in the soil can easily cause them to grow too tall or have root rot. When planting green beans in summer, they require a lot of water during the flowering and pod-setting period. In addition, due to the high temperature and large evaporation from the leaves, they must be kept sufficiently watered every day.

4. Topdressing

After the peak harvest period, if the bean varieties are well managed and have few diseases and insect pests, they can "turn over" and produce pods. Continue to apply fertilizer after the peak pod-bearing period to promote the sprouting of side branches of the plant to form more side flower buds, and allow the flower buds on the inflorescences that have been harvested to continue to bloom and produce pods.

5. Remove side branches

The picking time of beans is relatively long. If the beans grow too vigorously, they will easily cause excessive shade between the plants, which will affect pod setting and cause many diseases and pests. You can appropriately remove some leaves and excess side branches to maintain ventilation and light.

6. Pest and disease control

In terms of disease and pest control, especially damping-off disease, it mainly causes harm in the seedling stage, causing seeds to rot or become infected before the seedlings emerge, causing the seedlings to grow slowly or dry up and die. Before sowing, mix the seeds with 50% thiram wettable powder at a rate of 0.3% by weight of the seeds; keep the plants ventilated and well-lit. At the onset of the disease, it can be prevented by spraying 300 times of 23% ammonia copper aqueous solution or 3000-4000 times of 72% agricultural streptomycin sulfate soluble powder.
