How long does it take for camellia layering to take root? Air layering propagation technology

1. How long does it take to take root?

If camellia is propagated by layering, it usually takes a month for roots to take shape. It should be noted that plants cannot be transplanted after they have just taken root. The new roots are not enough to absorb water and nutrients for the plant's growth. The original plant needs to provide a certain amount of water and fertilizer. It usually takes half a year for the new roots to grow.

2. Layering propagation

1. Layering time: The time for camellia layering is generally spring and autumn, which is the growing period of the plant. There is sufficient water and fertilizer supply to ensure that it can grow new roots. If it is in summer, due to the high temperature and moist soil, the layering will be very easy to rot. Not only will it fail to survive, but the original plant will also become sick.

2. Select branches and ring-bark: If you want the camellia branches to take root, there must be a wound, and generally you have to ring-bark the branches. Usually it is enough to peel one layer, or you can ring peel two layers, with each layer being 2 cm wide and the two layers also 2 cm apart. This can increase the chance of rooting and prevent wound healing.

3. Wrap with wet soil: After ring-barking the camellia branches, you need to wrap the ring-barking area with wet soil to provide an environment for rooting. First, mix rooting powder and fungicide with red clay, make it into rooting mud, and wrap the wound with it. Then prepare some sphagnum moss, wrap it with another layer from the outside, and tie it tightly with a plastic bag to ensure that the inside is moist.

4. Cutting and transplanting: Regularly observe the condition of the substrate in the plastic bag. If the substrate turns white, it means that it lacks moisture and you need to inject some water with a syringe. If it is too moist, you can poke a few holes in the bag to drain water. Usually after half a year, the roots that have grown have become relatively strong and can be divided and replanted elsewhere.
