How to plant strawberry seedlings

Strawberry has high nutritional value, short cultivation cycle, early maturity, strong adaptability and easy management. It is a berry with high economic value and is grown in all parts of my country. Among them, planting strawberry seedlings is a common cultivation method. So what are the specific methods of planting strawberry seedlings? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Soil selection

Strawberry is a crop with very shallow roots, so it is suitable to choose sandy soil with a depth of 20 cm, with water-locking and soil-fixing properties, high soil organic matter content, and good pressure test permeability for sowing and seedling raising. In addition, strawberries are more suitable for a slightly acidic and alkaline soil environment, and the pH value should be controlled between 5.5-6.0.

2. Select strong seedlings

Currently, strawberries are mainly grown in greenhouses . It is recommended to choose varieties that have shallow dormancy, are not affected by storage and transportation, have excellent quality, are highly resistant to insects and diseases, have high yields, and are suitable for greenhouse cultivation, such as Akihime, Hongyan, and Fengxiang. The standards for strong seedlings are: free of pests and diseases, growing, with evenly differentiated flower buds, normal leaf color, complete leaflets, plump central buds, and a strong plant body.

3. Planting time

You can choose to plant it in September in autumn. After it spends a winter, it can be harvested and put on the market in March of the following year. However, if you choose to plant outdoors, you can plant in March or April in spring.

4. Planting method

First, dig the soil, stretch the roots of the strawberry seedlings into the hole, then fill in fine soil and compact it. Finally, gently lift the seedlings so that the roots are tightly combined with the soil. Immediately after planting, water them once to help them take root. After watering, plants with leaking roots or blocked cores should be adjusted or replanted in time. Those that are missed should be replanted in time to ensure the planting quality and all seedlings.

5. Planting depth

The best planting depth for strawberries is when the base of the seedling is level with the ground. It is not good to plant too deep or too shallow. The general depth should be around 0.5-1 cm to avoid difficulty in rooting the plant.

6. Transplanting and planting

When the strawberry seedlings grow 3-4 true leaves, they can be transplanted and planted. Before transplanting, spray the strawberries with 1000 times diluted thiophanate-methyl fungicide + brassinolide to increase the survival rate after transplanting and avoid diseases. After the strawberry seedlings have grown, water them thoroughly and apply high-phosphorus water-soluble fertilizer along the water to promote rooting. Keep the soil moist to promote strawberry growth.

In general, the method of planting strawberry seedlings is not difficult. Basically, half of the success is achieved by doing the preliminary preparation work such as selecting seedlings and soil. Of course, after planting, we must also strengthen subsequent seedling management to ensure that the strawberry seedlings can survive smoothly.
