As a cold-blooded animal, the physiological functions and metabolic rates of turtles are significantly affected by the ambient temperature. Now that winter is approaching and the temperature has dropped sharply, how turtles survive the winter has become a concern for many pet lovers. Let’s take a look at how turtles spend the winter. 1. Shallow water hibernation method Shallow water hibernation is one of the simplest and most direct ways to survive the winter. The method is to put clean water in the turtle pond or turtle box, with the water level not exceeding the turtle's back, and place it in a dark corner inside or outside the house. When the outdoor temperature is too low, move it indoors to keep the temperature constant. But please note that you should check the water quality regularly to avoid water deterioration or water pollution by excrement, and to prevent the turtle's skin from rotting. 2. Mud and water hibernation method The mud and water hibernation method simulates the hibernation environment of turtles in the wild and has a good thermal insulation effect. Mud and water can be mixed in a certain proportion to make slurry, in which the turtle can hibernate. The mud can generally be yellow mud, red mud or pond mud. Please note that it must be disinfected before use. 3. Moss hibernation method Prepare a box, clean, uncontaminated moss (recommended for pets), and old water from your turtle's tank. Make holes in the lid of the box for ventilation, soak up the moss with water and spread it on the bottom of the box (avoid excess water accumulation), then put the turtle in the moss, and it will find a hiding place on its own to spend the winter. 4. Wet cloth hibernation method Cover the turtle with a wet towel, sprinkle water regularly to keep the towel moist, no water accumulation, and place it in a dark place. This method is more suitable for urban owners. The towel can be changed every two weeks to ensure hygiene and cleanliness. 5. Heating feeding method For some turtle species or individuals that cannot adapt to hibernation, you can choose to raise them in a warm environment. Generally, equipment such as heaters, thermostats and filtration systems can be used to keep the temperature of the breeding environment at around 28°C. 6. Notes (1) For some tropical turtle species, hibernation may not be necessary and forced hibernation may cause health problems. (2) During hibernation, try to minimize disturbances to the turtle, as frequent awakenings may result in excessive energy consumption. (3) After hibernation ends, gradually raise the turtle's ambient temperature to normal activity temperature and allow the turtle to slowly wake up. Cannot be awakened suddenly from hibernation. In general, if your turtle wants to survive the winter safely, it is very important to understand the hibernation habits of specific species. At the same time, some preparations before wintering need to be made in advance to provide the turtle with a safe, moist, and temperature-suitable hibernation environment.
