When is the best time to plant figs?

The fig tree is a small deciduous tree native to the Mediterranean region, but is also widely cultivated in many parts of our country. This tree is famous for its fruit, which is sweet, soft and delicate with a unique fragrance. Let’s learn together when is the best time to plant figs?

When is the best time to plant figs?

The best time to plant fig trees is usually in the spring, during March and April, before the trees begin to bud. In autumn, when the leaves of the fig tree have fallen, you can dig up the seedlings and plant them. It is worth noting that after planting fig trees in autumn, insulation and cold protection measures must be taken to prevent the trees from being damaged by frost due to low temperatures. Since fig trees are neither waterlogged nor cold-resistant, special attention needs to be paid to the management of these two aspects during the cultivation process.

How to propagate figs:

1. Cutting propagation

The best time to propagate fig trees by cuttings is in spring, summer and autumn. At this time, select one-year-old or two-year-old branches from healthy fig trees and cut them into 15 to 20 cm in length. The base of the branches is cut into a bevel to facilitate cuttings. When taking cuttings in spring, ensure that the minimum temperature is not lower than 15 degrees Celsius to increase the survival rate of the branches. Before cutting, soak the inserted part of the branch in A BT rooting powder solution for about 10 seconds, then take it out for cutting. After cuttings, use fertile soil and keep it moist, and the fig branches will take root in about 20 days.

2. Layering method

Layering is an easy method of propagating fig trees. Bury the branches close to the ground directly into the soil, wait for them to take root, and then cut off the branches to form a new fig tree. Layering is usually done in spring, and the new plants, after rooting, can be transplanted the following year.

Fig Tree Management

Fig trees have a strong adaptability to saline-alkali environments and show a wide range of environmental adaptability. After the fig seedlings have taken root, the appropriate soil moisture should be maintained at about 70%, avoiding being too wet, which will help the fig tree survive. For those who choose to plant fig trees in pots, it is recommended to use larger pots and pay attention to proper fertilization and watering. Since the roots of the fig tree cannot penetrate deep into the soil to absorb nutrients, organic fertilizers containing beneficial microorganisms should be added to the culture soil, and nitrogen fertilizers such as urea should be avoided. Too much nitrogen fertilizer will affect rooting in the early stages and cause the plant to grow too tall in the later stages. For potted fig trees, you also need to pay attention to controlling the height of the plant to avoid the branches being too high.

The above is an introduction to the planting time and key points of fig trees. The overall market prospects of figs are still very good. If you want to plant them, it is recommended to learn the planting techniques in advance.
