Detailed explanation of walnut tree grafting technology and later management

1. Grafting Technology

1. Time: When grafting walnut trees, you should choose a good time. The more suitable time is between March and April. Usually, grafting can be done in mid-to-late March.

2. Scion: Use the strongest branches. After cutting, remove the leaves and keep 2cm petiole. It is best to graft it as soon as possible. If you have to wait a while, wrap it with a wet cloth.

3. Processing: Make a horizontal cut at 0.5cm from the upper bud of the scion and 0.5cm below the petiole, then make a longitudinal cut on both sides of the petiole to remove the buds. Cut the rootstock horizontally according to the length of the cut buds, and cut the outside longitudinally to pry open the skin.

4. Grafting: Stick the buds on the cut position of the rootstock, and then wrap them with plastic bags or tape. It should be noted that its petiole and grafted bud should be exposed.

2. Post-management

1. An inspection should be done about 10 days after grafting. If it does not survive, it needs to be re-grafted as soon as possible. The method to judge whether it is alive is also very simple. If the petiole falls off or its buds begin to sprout, it means it is alive.

2. After completing the grafting, you should understand the local weather in advance and avoid letting it be exposed to rain, otherwise it will hinder its survival. In addition, after the new shoots grow to about 5 cm, the bound film can be removed.
