When is the right time to plant sugarcane?

Sugarcane is a tropical crop that prefers warm and sunny environments. Sugar cane, a type of sugarcane, is favored for its higher sugar content. In order to achieve optimal growth and development, sugar cane is suitable for planting in areas with fertile soil and sufficient sunlight. At the same time, climatic conditions with a large temperature difference between day and night are conducive to the accumulation of sugar. Let’s learn together when is the right time to plant sugarcane?

When is the right time to plant sugarcane?

Sugarcane is usually planted in spring, and the suitable sowing period is from late February to early April. In China's major sugarcane-growing areas, the spring sowing period is generally from the end of January to mid-March. The sowing time is earlier in the south and slightly later in the north, but it should not exceed mid-April at the latest. The sugarcane harvest period is generally from May to mid-July. As for autumn sowing, the suitable time is from the end of August to the end of September, and the harvest period is in mid-December.

Sugarcane Planting Methods

1. Choose good varieties

Selecting high-quality sugarcane varieties is the key to increasing sugarcane yields. All regions should select high-quality varieties with strong adaptability, good disease and pest resistance, and good perennial root properties according to their own climate and soil conditions.

2. Deep plowing of soil and application of basal fertilizer

There are usually two ways to deep plow sugarcane fields: ox plowing and mechanical deep plowing. When deep plowing is done mechanically, the plow depth is recommended to be controlled within 35 to 45 cm, and a hard soil layer breaker can be used to loosen the soil; when plowing with cattle, the plow depth should not exceed 30 cm, and the soil should be broken up using the "two plows and two harrows" method. At the same time, basal fertilizers should be applied reasonably, including phosphorus fertilizer, potassium fertilizer and organic fertilizer , among which organic fertilizer is particularly important. The amount of fertilizer needs to be adjusted according to soil conditions. Usually the amount of superphosphate is 10 to 15 kg per 667 square meters, the amount of farmyard manure is 1000 to 1500 kg, and the amount of potassium sulfate is 10 to 15 kg, which should be spread evenly.

3. Careful seed selection and seed treatment

3.1 Seed selection

When selecting seeds, you should choose sugarcane with thick stems, full buds and no diseases or insect pests, and cut them into single-bud, double-bud or multi-bud sections, ensuring that the cut is smooth.

3.2 Seed disinfection

Seed disinfection can improve the seeds' ability to absorb water and reduce pests and diseases. Commonly used methods include soaking seeds in clean water, lime water and chemicals. The soaking time varies according to the method, but usually does not exceed 2 hours to avoid damaging the seeds.

4. Field Management

When the sugarcane has 4 to 6 leaves, large soil cultivation is carried out. Apply 50 kg of low-concentration (25%) compound fertilizer , 20 kg of potassium fertilizer and 20 kg of urea per 667 square meters of sugarcane field, mix well and spread. The time for major soil cultivation should not be later than the end of June, and is generally carried out between May and June.

The above is an introduction to the sowing time and planting points of sugarcane. Sugarcane is a light-loving plant, so it is not suitable for planting in all areas. Do not try it easily in areas with low temperatures.
