Which month is best to plant chrysanthemums?

Chrysanthemum has many varieties, and asexual reproduction methods such as cuttings or grafting are usually used to cultivate new plants, so as to maintain the characteristics of the mother plant. If seeds are used for sexual reproduction, the offspring may show greater variation in traits. For different chrysanthemum varieties, the sowing time needs to be determined according to their respective growth habits. For example, marigolds and cineraria are suitable for sowing in autumn, while cosmos, ground cover daisy and medallion are more suitable for sowing in spring.

For general autumn chrysanthemums, there are two different cultivation modes. One is direct sowing, usually in May, followed by two toppings in June and July to encourage branching. Another method is to take cuttings first and then plant. In this case, sowing can be done between March and April. After the seedlings have grown, branching, cuttings and seedling raising will be carried out in May, transplanting will be carried out in June, and topping will be carried out again in July.

Chrysanthemum Planting Tips

Cutting propagation: This is the most commonly used propagation method for chrysanthemums. Usually around the time of Grain Rain in spring, cuttings are taken from new seedlings that have overwintered perennial roots for propagation. After cuttings, keep the seedbed moist and they will take root and survive after about 20 days. The spacing between rows and plants for cuttings is usually 12 cm, and the spacing between rows and plants for the second cutting is 8 cm.

Propagation by division: When harvesting chrysanthemums, choose healthy plants that are free of disease and insect pests, cut off the upper branches and leave the roots, and cover them with straw mud or hair ash. In the spring of the second year, water and fertilize the seedlings before they sprout to make them strong and facilitate division. Division is usually carried out around the time of Grain Rain. The seedlings are pulled up and split from the rhizomes , leaving 2 to 3 buds on each plant, and then planted immediately.

Layering propagation: This is a propagation method that has been successfully tested in Anhui, Zhejiang and other places. Layering can improve land utilization and reduce pests and diseases. Layering is carried out in two times. The first time is around the beginning of summer, when the chrysanthemum branches are turned over, and wet mud is pressed every 10 cm to compact them. The tips are removed to allow new branches to grow from the leaf axils. The second time is around the Great Heat, when the newly sprouted branches are pressed down and fertilizer is applied.

Sowing propagation: In spring, sow the treated seeds evenly, then cover with soil and keep the soil moist. After sowing, it should be placed in semi-shade and the temperature should be controlled between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius to promote seed germination.

The above is an introduction to the planting time of chrysanthemums. There are actually quite a lot of varieties of chrysanthemums, and you can carry out certain maintenance according to the different characteristics of chrysanthemums.
