How and when to plant gladiolus

Gladiolus, also known as gladiolus , is a perennial herb of the genus Gladiolus in the Iridaceae family. It is known as the "Four Major Cut Flowers in the World" along with cut roses , carnations and gerberas. Below, the editor will introduce the planting method and time of gladiolus, let’s take a look.

1. Planting time

Gladiolus is usually planted in spring when the climate is warm and suitable. After sowing, the seeds will take root and sprout quickly, grow healthily, and survive easily, thus ensuring their survival rate. Like other plants, gladiolus is sown in spring, grows in summer, is harvested in autumn, and hibernates in winter.

2. Bulb processing

First, select some high-quality gladiolus bulbs that are fuller in shape and not attacked by pests and diseases. The diameter of the bulb should be about 10 cm. First remove the outer membrane of the bulb, and then soak it in a carbendazim solution or formalin solution for half an hour. When the time is up, take out the bulbs and place them in a cool and ventilated place to dry.

3. Soil

The potting soil should be loose, breathable, fertile, and well-drained. The pH value of the soil should be around 6. Such soil is more conducive to the growth of gladiolus. When growing gladiolus in a flowerpot, it is generally sufficient to plant it 10 cm deep in the soil.

4. Planting method

Put the selected soil into the flowerpot, level the surface of the soil, and then bury the treated bulbs in the soil, keeping the depth at about 10 cm. Do not plant too deep, otherwise the bulbs will not germinate well.

5. Fertilization

For gladiolus, fertilization is essential during the cultivation process. Generally, fertilize 4 to 5 times a month after planting. When applying fertilizers, you should pay attention to the ratio. Generally, you should not use too much nitrogen fertilizer, and you should add appropriate amounts of phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer. It is sufficient to fertilize 2 to 3 times during the growing season and once after flowering.

6. Moisture

Gladiolus needs more water during the growing period, and keeping the soil moist can promote growth. There are different watering requirements in different seasons. In spring and autumn, it is generally necessary to water once every two to three days to ensure that the soil is moist. In the high temperature of summer, more water is needed, generally once every one to two days, but be careful not to water too much, otherwise it will cause root rot.

7. Temperature

The most suitable growth temperature for gladiolus is 21 to 26 degrees during the day and 11 to 16 degrees at night. Gladiolus is not cold-resistant in winter. Its growth will be inhibited in an environment below 2 degrees, and the developing flower buds will also stop growing. During the stage of flower bud differentiation, a certain temperature difference is required to grow better.

8. Notes

In rainy weather, pay attention to soil drainage to prevent water accumulation and cause gladiolus root rot. After the gladiolus blooms, remove the extra branches. Also, add more water during the flowering period, avoid water shortage, and keep the soil in the pot moist. Protect the bulbs after the flowers fade.

The above is the planting method and time of gladiolus. After the gladiolus seedlings emerge, water it once every 7 days. Water it thoroughly once before flowering. Use potassium fertilizer once every 10-15 days to meet its growth needs.
