How to prune jasmine and what to pay attention to

Jasmine pruning time

Jasmine can be pruned three times a year. The first is during the growing season in spring to promote plant growth and flowering. The second is after the flowers fade, that is, in August and September, to reduce nutrient consumption. The third is during the winter dormancy period. Pruning at this time can help it grow stronger.

How to prune jasmine

1. Heavy pruning in spring

Jasmine can be heavily pruned in late March or around Qingming Festival in April. Remove all the old leaves and keep it in a sunny place. After new buds appear on the branches of the jasmine, keep 1-2 new buds on the tender branches and prune 0.5 cm above the new buds. The cut should be flat.

After jasmine is heavily pruned, a batch of new buds will sprout on the branches. We should wipe off the new buds that are not growing well at any time. When the new branches tend to grow too long, we should top the long branches and only keep 1-2 pairs of leaves on each new branch to promote branching.

2. Pruning after flowering

Jasmine has a relatively long flowering period, blooming one crop after another. After each jasmine flower fades, the withered flowers and the two pairs of leaves under the flowers should be cut off to promote more branching of the plant and bloom again.

3. Trim at any time

During the growth period of jasmine, if you find any overgrown branches or thin branches, you should prune them at any time to remove the weak and keep the strong. If you find any branches with diseases and pests, you should also prune the branches with serious diseases and pests at any time to prevent the diseases and pests from spreading further.
