Key points of high-yield cultivation technology of Chinese cabbage

Although cabbage is an easy-to-cultivate vegetable , you may still encounter problems such as poor growth, loose heart leaves, root rot, center rot, and leaf falling during the planting and care process. Once these problems are properly resolved, achieving high yields of cabbage will no longer be a problem. Let’s learn the key points of high-yield cultivation technology of cabbage.

1. Variety selection

For cabbage planted in autumn, seeds that are adapted to the autumn climate should be selected, with priority given to varieties that are disease-resistant, cold-resistant, and durable in storage. Green-leaf cabbage varieties are generally more resistant to disease than yellow-white-leaf varieties, while mid- and late-maturing varieties are more resistant to storage and transportation than early-maturing varieties. It is recommended to choose medium to late maturing cabbage varieties with a growth cycle of 70 to 90 days.

2. Plot selection

Cabbage has a shallow root system and has high requirements for soil fertility and water retention capacity. Therefore, fertile, loose, and good water and fertilizer retention land should be selected. To avoid planting the same cabbage year after year, it is recommended to plant it again after 2 to 3 years in the same field where cabbage was planted the previous year.

3. Soil preparation and fertilization

Half a month before sowing, the planting land should be deeply plowed to a depth of 25 to 30 cm and dry -dried, and quicklime and decomposed farmyard manure should be spread before plowing. 3 to 5 days before sowing, fine tillage and ridge making should be carried out, and the soil should be sterilized and disinfected at the same time. The base fertilizer should be mainly decomposed farmyard manure or commercial organic fertilizer , with appropriate amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Chinese cabbage has the greatest demand for potassium, followed by nitrogen, and the least for phosphorus.

4. Seedling management

Cabbage will germinate 3 to 5 days after sowing. If it encounters high temperature and drought before germination, you can water it in time to promote germination. After emergence, thinning and transplanting are carried out, and the spacing between seedlings is gradually increased after each thinning. When thinning out seedlings, focus on removing poor quality seedlings and selecting strong seedlings. Thinning and transplanting should be completed from the clumping stage to the early rosette stage.

5. Topdressing and irrigation

During the growth period of cabbage, topdressing needs to be applied in stages. The principle is to supplement nitrogen in the early stage and phosphorus and potassium in the middle and late stages. The seedling stage, rosette stage, and early and middle stages of heading are the critical periods for topdressing. Foliar spraying of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, chelated calcium, boron fertilizer, etc. can increase yield and quality. Watering management should keep the soil moist, maintain sufficient water supply during the heading period, and stop watering 7 to 10 days before maturity.

In short, cabbage planting looks relatively simple, but there are actually many things that require your attention, including the later bundling and harvesting of leaves.
