Breeding methods and reproduction of red jade birds

The ruby bird, also known as the red canary, is a breed bred by hybridizing the orange canary and the scarlet finch. The color of its feathers is very bright and its call is very pleasant, especially the voice of the male bird, which is melodious and graceful. Below, I will introduce the breeding methods and reproduction of Ruby Bird, let’s take a look.

1. Choose a breeding cage

The body of the Ruby Bird is relatively weak, so they should be allowed to exercise more often. Therefore, the breeding cage must be large, and it is best to use a special canary breeding cage. Male and female birds are usually kept in separate cages, with only one bird in each cage. In August and September, transfer them to breeding cages and keep them there to allow them to build nests and reproduce.

2. Feeding management

The daily feed of the Ruby Bird is millet, barnyard grass, cornmeal steamed bread, rapeseed , apples, green vegetables, etc. Several feeds can be mixed and fed, such as 2 parts of millet, 7 parts of barnyard grass, and 1 part of rapeseed. When it is difficult to source barnyard grass, foxtail millet or millet can be used instead.

3. Daily management

Clean the feces from the bottom of the cage 2-3 times a week, brush the food and water pots once a day and replace the food and water, wash the perches every 3 days, bathe the cage at least once a week, and trim the claws when appropriate. If the Ruby Bird is exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, its feathers will fade, so it is enough to bask in soft sunlight for an hour every day. On summer nights, it is best to cover the bird cage with a cage cover to prevent mosquito bites.

4. Disease prevention

July to August every year is the molting period for Ruby Birds. The weak ones often die, and the healthy ones are also susceptible to diseases. Therefore, in addition to adding 10% rapeseed and cuttlefish bone meal to the feed, it is also necessary to avoid wind and minimize contact with the outside world.

5. Build a nest and lay eggs

Before pairing, the male and female canaries should be kept separately. When they kiss each other with their mouths across the cage, they can be put into the breeding cage together. When the male and female birds have gotten along well, you can hang the artificial nest above the breeding cage. When you see the female bird hovering or circling over the nest with its feathers in its beak, it means nest-building has begun. You should hang clean cotton on the cage post, and the bird will soon carry it to build the nest. 3-4 days after the nest is built, the female bird begins to lay eggs, 2-6 eggs per nest.

6. Incubate at the right time

The female canary is responsible for incubating the eggs. Since the female lays one egg per day, the chicks are laid at inconsistent times. To overcome this shortcoming, in some places after the female bird lays eggs, the real eggs are replaced with fake eggs made of plaster and preserved. The fake eggs are taken out only when four eggs are laid. The first three real eggs are put back into the nest and allowed to incubate, so that the four chicks hatch on the same day.

The above is the breeding method and reproduction of Ruby Bird. Ruby Bird generally lays 4-5 eggs per nest and reproduces from January to July every year. The female bird is mainly responsible for incubating the eggs, and the incubation period is about 14-16 days.
