Ugly monster planting technology and management

Ugly monster planting technology and management

The ugly orange, also known as the ugly citrus , has the scientific name of Unknown Fire . It is the main hybrid citrus variety grown in Sichuan. This variety has a high natural fruit setting rate. A normal high-yield tree can produce about 2,000 to 2,500 kilograms per mu. The planting benefits are outstanding, and therefore it is favored by growers. So what are the planting techniques and management of ugly monsters? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Site selection for park construction

The cold resistance of the Nashi mandarin orange is not as good as that of the Wenzhou mandarin orange, and it matures later, so the orchard should be built in an area with warm winter, wind shelter and sunny conditions. At the same time, choose a place with fertile soil, deep and loose soil layer and sufficient water resources for planting.

2. Rootstock selection

The cultivation of Shiranui generally adopts the method of high grafting and changing seeds. Therefore, when choosing rootstocks, red mandarin oranges and sweet oranges should be the main ones, and they should not be grafted onto trifoliate orange rootstocks. The middle stock should be a variety with strong growth potential, such as navel orange, blood orange, etc. Avoid using Wenzhou mandarin orange.

3. Grafting operation

Choose a sunny day around the Rain Water solar term when the sap begins to flow and the temperature is above 10°C for grafting. The method is: saw off the central trunk and expose the inner part of the crown. Select 3-5 branches in different directions, with a branch diameter less than 6-8 cm, and the anvil height is controlled at 1-1.2 meters. Generally, for a tree with an average yield of about 50 kg, 35-40 graftings are required, and depending on the size of the tree crown, a small number of horizontal, drooping weak branches are retained below the rootstock interface as auxiliary branches.

4. Management points

(1) If new shoots grow too long, pinch them off in time to promote rapid maturation and germination. Generally, you can pinch off or cut short the leaves to 6-8 pieces. Don’t cut the autumn branches.

(2) When the second batch of shoots are mature, remove the film immediately.

(3) Every time a new sprout grows to 1-3 cm long, spray pesticides immediately to prevent and control pests and diseases, including fungicide + insecticide + miticide . Spray again after 7 days.

(4) Strengthen fertilizer and water management, and apply fertilizer 1-2 times before each germination. Or fertilize every 15-20 days. Liquid carbon- containing compound fertilizer is used to supplement organic matter (humic acid) + nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium + medium and trace elements.

5. Pest and disease control

In winter, do a good job of cleaning the garden, cut off diseased and insect-infested branches, burn dead branches, and spray the entire garden with 100-150 times diluted 45% lime sulfur mixture. In spring and summer, the focus is on the prevention and control of anthrax, resin disease, foot rot, mites, moths, longhorn beetles, aphids, etc. In autumn, we will continue to prevent and control foot rot, mites, moths, longhorn beetles, scale insects, etc.

In general, Ugly is an excellent variety of citrus. Not only is it simple and convenient to grow, but it also has the characteristics of high yield, resistance to adversity, and late maturity. As long as it is properly managed, it is easy to obtain high yields.
