How many kinds of fruit trees can be grafted onto jujube trees?

Grafting of jujube trees is a common and effective propagation method, which can achieve the goal of early fruiting and early high yield. However, jujube tree grafting is a technical job and you must master the relevant technical methods. So, how many types of fruit trees can be grafted onto jujube trees? Let’s learn more about it below.

How many kinds of fruit trees can be grafted onto jujube trees?

Jujube trees can generally be grafted with black date trees , persimmon trees and other fruit trees. The suitable time for grafting is March and September. Pay attention to the freshness of the scion when grafting, otherwise it will be detrimental to the survival of the scion.

How to graft jujube trees?

1. Grafting points

(1) Scion treatment: The scion should be of good variety, one-year-old jujube head branches or strong secondary branches. Then cut the lower end of the back of the main bud into a smooth section 3-4 cm long. On both sides of the cut, cut off a piece of branch bark to expose the cambium. Then cut a short bevel 0.5 cm long on the back of the lower end of the cut to facilitate insertion.

(2) Stock treatment: Use a utility knife to make a longitudinal cut on the windward side of the stock, penetrating deep into the wood layer, and then use the knife to gently separate the cortex from the wood.

(3) Insert the scion: slowly insert the scion into the incision, leaving about 0.2 cm of the scion incision exposed. Then wrap it tightly with plastic film and secure it. The long cut side of the scion should face inwards, and the short cut side should face outwards.

2. Grafting method

There are many methods for grafting jujube trees, the most commonly used are cleft grafting and bark grafting.

(1) Cleft grafting: Cleft grafting can be performed in March or April, using large rootstocks or large trees for grafting. Cut off a layer of the cross section of the rootstock, use scissors to make a 2-3 meter incision in the center of the cross section of the rootstock, cut the root of the cutting into a double-sided wedge shape, insert it into the split of the rootstock, and then wrap the interface tightly with plastic film.

(2) Bark grafting: Bark grafting is best done after the jujube tree sprouts, when the sap is flowing vigorously and the bark is easy to peel off. First, use scissors to cut the bottom of the cutting into an oblique surface, and then insert it obliquely downward along the incision of the rootstock. Be careful not to insert the cutting completely. You need to expose a little bit of the cutting wound, commonly known as "exposing the white", to facilitate the growth of healing tissue. Then use plastic film to wrap the incision of the rootstock and the connecting part with the scion tightly to prevent air from passing through. The grafting is completed.

In general, jujube trees can be grafted onto black jujube trees, persimmon trees and other fruit trees. That is, the branches of the persimmon tree are grafted onto the trunk of the black jujube tree. There are many methods of grafting, such as cleft grafting, etc. Just master the relevant technical points.
