Cultivation techniques of azalea

Cultivation techniques of azalea

The azalea has bright colors and beautiful petals. It is not only very beautiful, but also relatively cold and heat resistant. It is very easy to grow. It can be grown in potted plants or in the garden. Below, the editor will introduce some cultivation techniques of rhododendron, let’s take a look.

1. Soil

Rhododendron is suitable for growing in acidic soil with a pH of 5.5-6.5, and the soil must be fertile and have good drainage to reduce the occurrence of root diseases. You can buy professional flower soil for cultivation, or you can use leaf mold, garden soil, and river sand to prepare the soil in a ratio of 5:2:3.

2. Lighting

Azalea likes plenty of light. During the cultivation process, place it in a place with good sunlight. However, you should pay attention to the light intensity and time. When the sunlight is not strong in spring and autumn, you can place the azalea outdoors for cultivation. In the high temperature in summer, you should pay attention to shading. When there is insufficient light in winter, you should give the azalea additional light to promote growth. You can place it in a sunny place indoors.

3. Temperature

Azalea prefers a warm growing environment and has poor cold resistance. The ideal temperature is between 15-28 degrees Celsius, so when caring for it, be sure to place the azalea in an environment above 10 degrees Celsius.

4. Watering

During the growing period of azalea, the soil must be kept moist. Water it every 7 days in spring and autumn. Water evaporates quickly in summer, so water it in a small amount every day to keep the soil moist and spray some water on the leaves to cool it down. The temperature drops in winter and water evaporation slows down. Wait until the soil is dry before watering.

5. Fertilization

Rhododendron has small roots and a weak ability to absorb nutrients, so it is necessary to apply thin fertilizers frequently and avoid applying concentrated fertilizers. In spring, apply nitrogen fertilizer once a week to encourage growth of foliage and flower buds. In summer, azaleas begin to enter a dormant state, so stop fertilizing at this time, as fertilizing will cause the leaves to turn yellow and fall off. Apply phosphorus fertilizer once every half a month in autumn to promote the growth of flower buds and prepare for flowering next year.

6. Pruning

During the cultivation process, it is also necessary to regularly pruned it, cutting off the vigorous and dense branches and leaves so that nutrients can be concentrated on the flowering branches. If there are too many flower branches, they need to be pinched off. Too many flower buds will absorb most of the nutrients, causing the branches to be weak and not conducive to later growth.

The above are the cultivation techniques for azaleas. If you can open some windows at home when growing azaleas. You can open the windows for ventilation at noon, and do not place the azalea near cold air vents, air conditioning vents, heating vents, etc.
