Passion fruit planting methods and management

Passion fruit planting methods and management

Passion fruit is known as the "king of juice". It can be eaten fresh or processed into various forms such as juice, fruit dew, jam, jelly and lozenges. It has a unique flavor. Passion fruit is rich in nutrients, has beauty and health benefits, and has a large market demand, so there are relatively more farmers who grow it. Below we will learn about the planting and management methods of passion fruit.

1. Planting site selection

Passion fruit likes warm and sunny environment and has strong adaptability, but has poor cold resistance. Therefore, the planting site should be selected in a frost-free area with an annual average temperature above 18°C and an annual precipitation of 1500-2000 mm. During drought or rainy seasons, timely irrigation or drainage is required to ensure high yield and high quality of passion fruit. It can be planted in slightly acidic sandy soil, loam and other plots. It is best to choose a plot with an altitude of less than 500 meters.

2. Land preparation and scaffolding

Passion fruit is a vine plant, so the planting site needs to be prepared and a trellis needs to be built. Deep plowing and drying the land, quicklime can be used to disinfect the soil. The frame can be made of trellises, sheds, etc., and the materials can be wooden pillars, bamboo, etc. Use iron wire to connect the top of the frame and then cover it with wire mesh to facilitate the growth of passion fruit. The planting density is generally 2.5 meters × 3.5 meters, the hole size is 65 cm × 65 cm × 65 cm, and there are 755-1055 plants per hectare.

3. Planting and shaping

Planting is generally carried out in February and March each year, depending on the height of the fruit seedlings. After planting, dig holes, add soil and water in time to ensure the survival rate. After planting, remove the side buds on the main vine to promote the growth of the main buds. Pinch off the core at about 28 cm on the main branch, leaving 6-9 side branches in different directions as nutrient branches. After planting, spray insect repellent around the base of the fruit seedling stems in time.

4. Fertilization

Passion fruit grows fast, has high yield, and requires a lot of fertilizer. Apply appropriate amounts of fertilizer according to the nutrient requirements at different growth stages. Before planting, apply 2.0-6.0 kg of decomposed farmyard manure or about 0.5 kg of compound fertilizer to each plant. After planting, apply fertilizer 35-45 cm from the root of the plant, and then cover it with soil. Compound fertilizer should be applied in small amounts and multiple times to prevent root burn.

5. Prevention and control of common diseases

Common diseases include stem base rot, which is easy to occur in the early stage of passion fruit flowering and fruiting. To effectively prevent and control stem base rot, it is necessary to select disease-resistant and disease-free seedlings, adopt a one-year planting model, deep plowing and drying the land, do a good job of drainage, and disinfect the planting site in winter. Fertilization should be mainly organic fertilizer , with appropriate use of fertilizers such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

In short, passion fruit has high economic value. During the planting process, choose a plot with sufficient sunlight, warm and humid climate and convenient irrigation. At the same time, select high-quality varieties that are disease-resistant and disease-free. Do a good job in field management work such as land preparation, trellis erection, and fertilization, master the symptoms and prevention methods of common diseases and pests, and create good growing conditions for passion fruit, thereby achieving high yield and high quality and increasing the income from passion fruit cultivation.
