The best time to graft ginkgo, what tree is best to graft ginkgo

The best time to graft ginkgo, what tree is best to graft ginkgo

1. Grafting time

Ginkgo grafting usually takes place in spring and autumn. Spring grafting should be done at different times in different regions. Generally, in Zhejiang, it is around the Rain Water to Qingming Festival. In the south, the temperature rises earlier, so it should be done earlier, while in the north it should be delayed. Autumn grafting usually takes place in the rainy season. If the climate is too dry, the success rate of grafting will be reduced.

2. Rootstock Selection

Ginkgo grafting can only choose Ginkgo as the rootstock. Although it is dioecious, female ginkgo can be grafted onto male ginkgo, and male ginkgo can be grafted onto female ginkgo, or ordinary ginkgo can be grafted onto some excellent varieties. In addition, depending on the grafting method, there are also requirements for the age of the rootstock. For example, cleft grafting generally selects young trees under 5 years old, while cut grafting and bark grafting can be used on large and small trees.

3. Scion Treatment

Depending on the grafting method, the treatment of the scion is also different. For cleft grafting, choose a mature tree and use 1-3 year old strong branches as scion, and cut the bottom into a wedge shape. For grafting, choose 2-3 year old branches and cut the bottom into a bevel. The bark splice is similar to the cut splice, but the bevel is longer. Bud grafting requires cutting the selected buds into a shield shape.

4. Grafting

After preparing the rootstock and scion, you can proceed with grafting. Insert the bottom of the scion into the cut of the rootstock, wrap it tightly with plastic film to prevent water and air from outside from entering, so as to avoid wound infection. Pay attention to maintaining the air humidity. If it is too dry, it will not be conducive to survival.
