Remedial measures for corn hail disaster

Remedial measures for corn hail disaster

Recently, a new round of cold wave and cold air has arrived, and many areas are experiencing a "hail carnival" and "snowflake party". Among them, hail disasters must be taken seriously. When the hail density is high and the falling speed is fast, it often penetrates the corn leaf tissue, causing leaf tearing, causing plant damage, and thus affecting production. So what are the remedial measures after corn hail disasters? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Pruning and leaf cutting

After a hail disaster, cut off dead leaves and rotten leaves broken by hail in time, leaving the top of the leaves slightly exposed to promote the growth of the heart leaves.

2. Loosening the soil

After the hail, the ground will become compacted and the ground temperature will drop sharply in a short period of time, affecting the normal growth of corn roots. Therefore, it is necessary to hoe and loosen the soil in time after the weather clears up to quickly increase the ground temperature and promote the regrowth of corn seedlings .

3. Topdressing urea

After the hail, the leaves of corn seedlings were severely damaged, the photosynthetic efficiency of the plants decreased, the plants were lacking in nutrition, and their growth and development were hindered. Therefore, after the hail, 10-15 kg of urea can be applied per acre as appropriate to ensure normal nutrient supply.

4. Harvest early

For plots that have been severely affected by hail and have been pollinated for more than 25 days, early harvesting can be considered. The ears are sold as fresh corn, and the corn stalks are sold to farms as feed .

5. Replanting and supporting seedlings

Lift up the seedlings that have fallen over or are submerged in water as soon as possible so that they can resume growth as soon as possible. At the same time, for plots where there are some seedling shortages due to hail, you can transplant seedlings or replant seeds while the soil is still moist to reduce the losses caused by the shortage of seedlings.

6. Wound disinfection

After corn plants are harmed by hail, the damaged wounds are easily infected by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi and cause other diseases, especially the damaged parts of the stems. Generally, you can spray the whole plant with 3000 times diluted 72% agricultural streptomycin or 500 times diluted 5% fungus and virus cleaning agent to reduce the infection of pathogens such as bacteria or fungi.

7. Prevent melanoma

If the plants are covered with wounds due to hail, they are easily invaded by spores of smut, so it is necessary to prevent the occurrence of smut in advance after the hail. You can spray methyl thiophanate, and spray again once every week. Generally, 2-3 sprays are sufficient.

In general, cold air has frequently appeared in recent times. For growers, it is important to pay attention to weather changes in a timely manner and be prepared for disasters caused by heavy snow, heavy rain or hail to agricultural production, especially to strengthen post-disaster remedial work.
