When is the best season to grow spinach? How to grow spinach?

Spinach is suitable for growing in cool climates and has good cold resistance, but is not resistant to high temperatures. Spinach can grow well within the appropriate temperature range, but outside this range, especially high temperature, will affect the growth of spinach and even cause death. So when is the season to plant spinach? How to grow spinach?

1. Spinach sowing time

Spinach is a cold-tolerant vegetable that can be grown almost all year round. The specific sowing time is affected by season and climate:

1. Spring sowing

Spring is the peak season for spinach planting , with sowing usually taking place from mid-March to early April. During this period, the climate warms up and the sunshine is suitable, which is conducive to the growth of spinach.

2. Summer sowing

Despite the high summer temperatures, spinach can still grow. Sowing is generally done from mid-May to early June. In hot seasons, you need to pay attention to watering frequently to maintain soil moisture.

3. Autumn sowing

Autumn is also an important planting period for spinach, with sowing mostly taking place from mid-August to early September. The climate is cool and sunny at this time, which is suitable for spinach growth.

4. Winter sowing

Although winter is cold, spinach can still grow. Sowing is generally done from mid-October to early November. In low temperature seasons, insulation measures must be taken, such as covering the ground with mulch, to ensure the growth of spinach.

2. Spinach sowing technology

1. Soil Preparation

Spinach prefers fertile, loose, well-drained soil. Before sowing, the land should be deeply plowed, weeds and debris removed, and sufficient base fertilizer, such as well-rotted organic fertilizer or compound fertilizer , should be applied.

2. Seed treatment

Soak the seeds in warm water no higher than 30℃ for 6-8 hours. After drying, wrap them with wet cloth. Germinate them at 20-25℃. When the seeds turn white, they can be sown.

3. Sowing method

Spinach is mostly sown by broadcasting. Evenly spread the treated seeds and cover them with a layer of fine soil about 1 cm thick. Then water them in time to keep the soil moist.

4. Field management

Spinach needs to be weeded, loosened and irrigated in time during the growing period. Apply nitrogen fertilizer and phosphorus fertilizer in time according to the growth conditions to meet the nutritional needs of spinach. It is also necessary to bundle the leaves during a certain period of time to promote the growth of spinach.

5. Pest and disease control

Spinach may be susceptible to diseases and insect pests during its growing period, and agricultural and chemical control should be combined. Agricultural prevention and control includes selecting disease-resistant varieties, reasonable planting density, and scientific fertilization; chemical prevention involves selecting appropriate pesticides when pests and diseases occur, while paying attention to their use according to the instructions to avoid environmental and health risks.

6. Harvest and Preservation

The spinach harvest period is affected by variety and sowing time. Spring-sown and autumn-sown spinach can be harvested in about 40-50 days; summer-sown and winter-sown spinach may take 60-70 days due to climate changes. Harvest in sunny weather, remove yellow leaves and soil after cutting and then eat or preserve. If you need to store it, wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate it. It can stay fresh for several days to a week.

In short, spinach can be planted all year round, but the best planting season is spring and autumn. To achieve high yields, mastering good planting techniques is also crucial.
