How to prune bonsai osmanthus and how to shape it

How to prune bonsai osmanthus and how to shape it

1. Pruning method

When pruning, you need to adjust the overlapping branches, crossed branches, parallel branches and opposite branches, and cut off one of them, or thin them out one by one. The branches left behind must be guaranteed to have sufficient nutrients so that they can grow vigorously. When the branches grow to a suitable thickness, they should be pruned hard to shorten them and grow a second branch. Wait until the second branch grows thicker and then shorten it. Until there are two twigs left on each branch, and one twig is long and one short. After years of pruning, the remaining tree will be thicker and appear more vigorous and beneficial.

2. Pruning during the cultivation period

The cultivation period refers to the period from planting to shaping, and the length of pruning at this time is related to the shape. If you want to process it into a natural big tree, the cultivation period after shaping and pruning should be shortened. If you want to accumulate branches and cut the trunk for shaping, the time will be longer. The branches need to be pruned several times before they are formed. After pruning, the branches must have a certain degree of curvature and should be of different lengths.

3. Pruning during the ornamental period

The viewing period refers to the pruning after it is formed. Pruning is done at this time to maintain the tree shape. It should be pruned hard after the flowering period. After pruning, only two or three buds should be left on the branches, and the branches should be cut short. New shoots that grow in spring and summer should be cut off as long as they are not needed for shaping.
