Can the red spider lily be propagated by cuttings? How does the red spider lily propagate?

Can the red spider lily be propagated by cuttings? How does the red spider lily propagate?

1. Can it be propagated by cuttings?

Red spider lily cannot be propagated by cuttings. It is commonly propagated by sowing and bulb division, and new plants can also be obtained by bulb cutting and tissue culture. As a bulbous plant, its bulb is unbranched, so branch cuttings are not possible, and leaf cuttings have no chance of survival, so this method is not used.

2. How to reproduce

1. Seed propagation: Be sure to collect the seeds of the red spider lily after it blooms. Since the seeds have no dormancy, they must be sown as soon as possible after picking, otherwise it will affect rooting and germination. Prepare moist sandy loam, place the seeds on it, cover with a layer of potting soil, control the temperature at around 20℃, and they will germinate in 15 days. This method is not recommended for home cultivation, as it takes 4-5 years for seedlings to bloom.

2. Propagation by dividing bulbs: The red spider lily plants that have grown for many years will often grow many small bulbs around the mother bulb, and these small bulbs can be planted separately. It is usually done during the dormant period of the plant. After digging it out of the pot, remove the small ball from the mother ball, being careful not to damage the roots. It usually takes 1-2 years for the bulbs to bloom.

3. Bulb cutting: This method is mainly to make the bulbs cluster into small balls, and then separate them for cultivation. First, cut the base of the bulb in eight directions, at a depth of between one-half and two-thirds. After spraying with carbendazim for disinfection, place it in a cool place to dry, then insert it into moist sand or perlite. Adventitious buds will grow in about 3 months. After small bulbs are produced, they can be separated and planted.

4. Tissue culture: The method of tissue culture is similar to the bulb cutting method, but it requires more specialized tools. Generally, MS culture medium is used, and the ovary of red spider lily is used as the material. Callus tissue can be produced after culture, adventitious roots will grow in 1 month, and adventitious buds will grow in 3-4 months, after which it can be prepared for planting.
