How to care for yew bonsai in winter

Winter Watering

Watering in the greenhouse

After winter, the growth of yew trees basically stops and their ability to absorb water is greatly reduced, so it is not advisable to water them too much. If the yew is planted in a greenhouse, the soil should be kept dry to help it survive the winter. If you find that the soil in the pot is too dry, water it after 10 am or before 3 pm in sunny weather. Avoid watering too much. The water temperature should be similar to the outside temperature, and the temperature difference should not be too large. Too large a temperature difference will irritate the yew plant, and in severe cases, it will cause the plant to shed leaves, rot roots, or even die.

Indoor watering

Flowers grown indoors should be watered twice a week, and each time they are watered thoroughly. Don't keep it too wet, as this will cause root rot. But when the indoor temperature is relatively dry, you should spray water mist on the leaves to clean them and keep them moist.

ventilation

In winter, the yew should be placed in a well-ventilated and brightly lit place indoors, and the best ventilation time is after 9 am and before 3 pm. When the sun is strong at noon in winter, open the windows for ventilation.

Fertilization

In winter, the growth of yew trees stagnates and they do not need too many nutrients or fertilizers. Only when the temperature is above ℃ can fertilizers be easily absorbed.

prune

Winter is the dormant period of yew and also the main pruning period. Old plants should be pruned and shaped, dead branches and leaves should be removed to reduce nutrient consumption, which is conducive to the safe wintering of yew bonsai.

Keep warm

If there are too many bonsai, they can be placed in a greenhouse to overwinter. If there are fewer bonsai, they can be placed directly indoors to overwinter. Be careful not to place the bonsai near air conditioning or heating vents or floor heating. In northern regions, double-layer plastic film can be used for covering and insulation.
