Papaya planting technology, how to plant papaya seeds

1. Variety selection

There are many varieties of papaya, and different varieties are suitable for planting in different geographical conditions. For example, the central region of our country is more suitable for growing hairy papaya. This is a small tree with thornless branches, mostly pink flowers and oval fruits. The Tibetan papaya is suitable for planting in the mountainous areas of Tibet and western Sichuan. It has more thorns and entire leaves. Another type is the wrinkled papaya, which is suitable for growing in the north and has good cold resistance.

2. Seed Collection and Sowing

Papaya can be picked when it is ripe, then peeled open, the seeds taken out and dried, and the fuller ones can be kept. Before sowing, half of it should be soaked in soda solution for 6-8 hours, then taken out and drained, mixed with a little sand, sprinkled into the soil, and covered with a thin layer of soil. After sowing, water the seeds and cover the surface with a layer of straw to maintain a certain temperature and humidity. Seedlings will usually emerge in about 40-50 days.

3. Seedling cultivation method

After the papaya seedlings emerge, you need to add soil to keep them moist. When they grow 2-3 leaves, you need to reduce watering to prevent the plant from growing too tall. Start fertilizing when the plant has 4 leaves, and start raising seedlings when it has 5 leaves. During the seedling stage, pay attention to loosening the soil and weeding, and also water and fertilize appropriately. The seedling period varies depending on the planting time. The spring sowing seedling period is about 50-70 days, while the winter sowing seedling period is about 120-130 days.

IV. Daily Management

It is necessary to fertilize it in time during daily maintenance. Generally, topdressing is required in the early and late flowering stages, and fruit expansion stages, and basal fertilizer should also be applied in autumn. Fertilization is mostly applied in January before flowering, in early April after flowering, and in May, the fruit enlargement period. At this time, compound fertilizers are applied with relatively high phosphorus and potassium content. When applying base fertilizer in autumn, choose compound fertilizer mixed with animal manure, pour it into the soil after loosening it, and do not pour it near the tree trunk.
