How many days does it take for lettuce to sprout?

Lettuce is grown in all parts of China. In order to ensure the growth and development of lettuce, farmers must select new seeds of the year to ensure that the seeds are full, healthy and free of diseases and pests. So how many days does it take for lettuce to sprout? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. How many days does it take for lettuce to sprout?

Under normal circumstances, lettuce will germinate about 7-10 days after sowing. The germination time of lettuce seeds is affected by many factors, including seed quality, sowing time, soil temperature, humidity, etc.

If dry seeds are used for direct seeding after the soil thaws in spring, seedlings will generally emerge about 10 days after sowing. If dry seeds are directly sown when the temperature is 15-20℃, seedlings will generally emerge about 6-8 days after sowing. If the seeds are soaked and germinated in advance, the germination time can be advanced by about 2-3 days.

Under the condition of 20-25℃, it takes about 1-3 days for lettuce seeds to germinate after sowing, and it takes another 5-7 days for the germinated lettuce to emerge from the soil and become seedlings. If the lettuce seeds are germinated at low temperature in the high temperature season, they will generally emerge about 3-5 days after sowing.

2. Lettuce germination method

1. Soaking germination method

Soak the lettuce seeds in warm water at 25-30℃ for 6-8 hours. Stir gently several times during this period to promote the seeds to fully absorb water. After soaking, remove the seeds and dry them slightly to avoid excessive moisture causing seed rot. Place the dried seeds in an environment of 15-20℃ for germination. You can wrap the seeds with wet paper towels, cotton cloth or moist sand to maintain humidity. Check daily and keep the wrap moist; you should usually see the seeds sprout within a few days.

2. Paper towel germination method

Take a clean paper towel, spread it flat on a shallow dish or container, and lightly spray it with water to avoid standing water. Sprinkle the lettuce seeds evenly on the paper towel, and then lightly cover them with a layer of moistened paper towel, but be careful not to press too tightly so as not to affect the breathing of the seeds. Place the container in a warm, bright location but out of direct sunlight, checking the paper towel daily and rehydrating as needed until the seeds begin to germinate.

3. Cold storage germination method

Place the soaked seeds in a sealed bag or container and add some moistened medium such as sand, paper towel, or soil. Place the sealed bag or container in the refrigerator at 5-10℃ for 2-3 days. After refrigeration, move the seeds to a warm environment, keeping the temperature between 15-25℃, and the seeds will begin to germinate quickly.

4. Deep water well germination method

Suitable for high temperatures in summer, wrap the soaked seeds with wet cloth or gauze, but avoid direct contact of the seeds with water. Hang the wrapped seeds in a deep water well, but keep a certain distance to avoid direct contact between the seeds and the well water. Soak the wrap in well water 2-3 times a day for a few minutes to keep it moist. After a few days of germination, the seeds will begin to germinate.

The above is an introduction to how many days it takes for lettuce to germinate. To ensure that the lettuce germinates smoothly, growers should choose high-quality seeds for sowing, sow them in suitable seasons and weather conditions, keep the soil moist but avoid excessive moisture that may cause seed rot, and provide suitable light and temperature conditions.
