How to propagate roses by cuttings

How to propagate roses by cuttings

Rose cutting soil

It is best to use a new shallow clay pot with a diameter of 20 cm for rose cuttings, because it has good air permeability and is easy to root. Or to make it simpler, you can choose a transparent plastic box and wait until the cuttings are successfully taken before potting them.

The soil can be made of a mixture of 20% humus garden soil, 40% horse manure and 40% river sand.

Rose cutting time

The best time is spring (May) and autumn (October), when the temperature is between 20-25℃, which is most suitable for cuttings.

Preparation for rose cuttings

Before cutting, you should use a spray bottle to spray the soil in the pot with moisture the day before, but not too much. By the next day, the soil should be just slightly moist, which is most suitable for cutting.

The insertion depth is 3-4 cm. When inserting, first use chopsticks to make a hole in the soil, then insert the cuttings, press it down with your hands to make full contact with the potting soil and the cuttings, and then water it thoroughly.

Rose cutting method

When cutting, choose the semi-woody and healthy branches of the current year as cuttings, and use a very sharp knife;

Cut 6-10 cm with nodes, the incision should be smooth and neat, cut off the lower leaves, leaving only 3-4 leaflets at the top.

Buy a tube of vitamin B12 injection, open it, dip the cuttings in the solution, take them out and let them dry for a while before starting cuttings.

Rose cutting maintenance

After planting, it is best to cover the flowerpot with a plastic bag, tie the bag opening with a tape, open it when watering is needed, and tie it again after watering.

The flower pots that have been grafted should be placed in a place without direct sunlight. The potting soil should be sprayed with water every day within 10 days. Except for rainy days, it can be sprayed once on cloudy days and twice when the climate is dry, but the amount of water sprayed every day should not be too much.

After 10 days, you should still pay attention to keeping the soil moist. It needs to be shaded for 4-5 weeks, and only after germination can it be gradually allowed to receive some sunlight. It usually takes about 2 months for roots to form. After that, just normal maintenance is required.
