When to transplant onions?

When to transplant onions?

After onions are planted using seedling transplanting technology, farming and management conditions are improved, it is easy to cultivate strong seedlings, the incidence of diseases and insects is low, the yield is high, and the benefits are very significant. If you want to transplant onions, you must master the time and method. So when should onions be transplanted? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. When should onions be transplanted?

In areas where the winter temperature is above -7℃, onions are best transplanted about 30-40 days before freezing, and the transplanting time is generally concentrated from late October to mid-November. Transplanting at this time can ensure that the onions have enough growth time before wintering, forming strong seedlings and improving their cold resistance.

In areas where the winter temperature drops below -7°C, the onion transplanting time needs to be appropriately delayed. Usually, seedlings are raised in greenhouses or greenhouses in March and then transplanted in April or May. This can prevent the onions from being attacked by severe cold in winter and ensure their normal growth.

2. Onion Transplanting Method

1. Onion seedling selection

Choose onion seedlings with dark green leaves, thick stems, and well-developed root systems. Such onion seedlings have strong vitality and are easier to adapt to the new environment after transplanting. Avoid choosing onion seedlings with yellow leaves, thin stems or damaged roots, as these onion seedlings have a low survival rate after transplanting.

2. Soil watering

Before transplanting, water the soil thoroughly to make it loose and easy to dig and transplant. After transplanting, water should be applied in time to ensure that the roots of the onion seedlings are closely integrated with the soil and promote root growth.

3. Reasonably control the spacing between plants

The spacing between onion seedlings should be determined according to the variety and soil fertility. Generally speaking, a spacing of 10-15 cm is appropriate. Too dense a spacing between plants will cause the onion seedlings to compete for nutrients and light, affecting their growth, while too sparse a spacing between plants will waste land resources and reduce yields.

4. Transplanting depth

When transplanting onion seedlings, make sure the roots are completely buried in the soil, but don't bury the stems too deep to avoid affecting leaf growth and ventilation. The transplanting depth should generally be such that the roots are completely covered and the stems are exposed above the soil surface.

5. Transplanting tips

Before transplanting, soak the onion seedlings in water for at least an hour to make it easier to remove them from the original soil and help the onion seedlings better adapt to the new growing environment. Dig a hole the same size as the onion root system at the transplanting location, place the onion seedling vertically into the hole, and compact the soil slightly. Press the soil around the roots to prevent the seedlings from running away when watering.

The above is an introduction to when to transplant onions. Onion transplanting helps improve its growth quality and yield. The time of onion transplanting needs to be determined according to local climatic conditions. After transplanting, water in time according to the weather and soil moisture conditions.
