How to water garlic over the winter?

November is the right time to water garlic for the winter. Proper winter irrigation can effectively prevent frost damage, kill soil insect eggs, promote root growth, and provide sufficient water for garlic growth. It is one of the necessary measures for high garlic yields. So how do you water garlic during the winter? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Watering time

The best time to water garlic during the winter is generally in November, when the temperature gradually drops and the soil begins to enter the freezing period. However, the specific watering time needs to be determined according to soil moisture conditions and seedling growth.

2. Watering temperature

The most suitable temperature for watering during the winter is above 5℃, because watering is not recommended when the temperature drops to 1-2℃ to avoid freezing and frostbite of the plants.

3. Watering amount

When irrigating garlic in winter, generally about 40 cubic meters of water are applied per mu. When watering for the winter, make sure to water thoroughly but do not allow water to accumulate on the ground to prevent the roots from lacking anaerobic respiration and causing the seedlings to die. Be careful not to water too much. You can till the soil in time when it is dry or moist to facilitate wintering.

4. Watering method

(1) Furrow irrigation: This method is suitable for large-scale garlic planting. Furrows are dug in the garlic planting area and water is irrigated from the furrows. This can effectively guide water to the garlic root system, but the amount of water needs to be controlled to avoid excessive watering.

(3) Drip irrigation: It is a precise, economical and efficient watering method that can supply water in a fixed amount according to the water demand of garlic, saving water and energy. It is suitable for large-scale garlic planting and the pursuit of high efficiency.

5. Watering

(1) Combined fertilization: While watering the plants for the winter, you can also apply 10 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per mu.

(2) Water quality selection: When watering garlic, it is best to choose a clean water source with fewer impurities, such as natural precipitation or purified water that has been filtered to remove impurities.

(3) Covering with straw: After watering for winter, you can use grass manure, bean leaves and wheat straw to cover the garlic plants to retain moisture and keep warm, thereby increasing the ground temperature.

In general, watering during the winter is a highly technical job. The specific watering time and amount need to be determined based on local climate conditions, soil moisture and the growth conditions of garlic to ensure that the garlic can safely overwinter.
