When are onions planted and harvested in the north?

When are onions planted and harvested in the north?

Onions are highly adaptable to the environment and can grow in a variety of climatic conditions, but the most suitable growth temperature is 15-20℃. They are relatively cold-resistant and can grow in cool climates. They are also relatively drought-resistant, but they need an appropriate amount of water during their growth period. So when are onions planted and harvested in the north?

When are onions planted and harvested in the north?

1. Sowing time

In northern regions, sowing is generally done in autumn, usually in mid-to-late September. Some areas also carry out autumn sowing in late August to early September.

2. Harvest Time

The harvest time for onions in the north is generally from the end of May to the beginning of June. When harvesting, when the onion leaves gradually turn yellow from bottom to top, the pseudostem becomes soft and begins to fall over, the bulb stops expanding and the outer surface becomes leathery, it should be harvested in time.

What should you pay attention to when planting onions in autumn?

1. Soil Preparation

Choose loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam soil that has not been used to grow onions and garlic before for planting. Before sowing, fine land preparation and sufficient base fertilizer should be applied to ensure that the onions have sufficient nutrients for growth.

2. Sowing method

When sowing, mainly broadcasting is used. Before sowing, the soil should be irrigated with water. The spacing between seeds should be about 2-3 cm, and the sowing depth should be about 2-3 cm.

3. Field management

Before planting, it is necessary to cultivate strong seedlings and control underground pests, and control watering and fertilization. If the seedlings turn yellow, spray 0.3% urea aqueous solution on the leaves. Before freezing, water the plants enough for the winter, and water them once after they turn green in spring. After the leaves enter the vigorous growth period, apply 15 kg of urea per mu. 50 days after the plants turn green and before the bulbs swell, apply 10 kg of urea and 15 to 20 kg of potassium sulfate per mu.

4. Pest and disease control

The main onion diseases include downy mildew, gray mold, wilt, etc. Regular inspections should be carried out and diseased plants should be taken out of the field and destroyed in time to reduce the source of pathogens in the field. According to the disease patterns of onions, spray targeted pesticides for prevention and control.

5. Reasonable density of planting

When transplanting, onion seedlings should be transplanted separately according to their size, and large seedlings with leaf sheath diameters exceeding 8 mm and weak and diseased seedlings with diameters below 3 mm should be removed. Planting is generally completed from the end of October to early November, and the average daily temperature must be between 4°C and 5°C.

6. Planting density

The row spacing is 20 cm and the plant spacing is 15 cm. The planting depth should be such that the five-pronged branches are not buried. Water after planting to promote the survival of the onion seedlings. Avoid flooding with water, which will cause the soil to become compacted and will not be conducive to the rapid recovery of the onion growth.

To sum up, the sowing time of onions in the north is mainly concentrated in September, while the harvesting time is from the end of May to the beginning of June. These time points are determined based on the climatic conditions in the northern region and the growth cycle of onions.
