Causes and solutions for root rot of Huangli

Causes of root rot in Huangli

Anyone who has raised succulents knows that root rot is generally caused by three reasons: watering, fertilization, and soil.

Overwatering

If you water too much, it will cause oxygen deprivation and rot of the plant roots to a certain extent. Poor ventilation after watering is also one of the reasons.

Improper fertilization

Succulents do not need a lot of fertilizer, and the nutrients in the soil are basically sufficient. If you fertilize frequently, no matter you apply foliar fertilizer or root fertilizer, it will cause certain damage to the plants, causing poor root growth and thus rot.

Heavy clay soil

There are many reasons for the root rot of Huangli. The single soil type can also cause rot. If the soil is breathable, then excess water will flow down and will not cause flooding. However, if the soil is heavy and not breathable, coupled with excessive watering, it can easily cause root rot.

If the soil is not loosened or repotted for a long time, it will become compacted and cause root rot.

What to do if the roots of Huangli are rotten

Mild root rot

Generally, when the roots are rotten, remove the plant and cut away all the rotten parts until you see fresh flesh. Then spray it with carbendazim and dry it in a cool place for a few days. After the wound has dried, replace the soil with new one and replant, or plant it after the roots have grown through hydroponics. Be careful not to expose it to the sun before it takes root, otherwise it will easily wither.

Root rot is more serious

For plants whose roots have completely rotted and whose leaves have turned yellow and withered, there is no way to save them. The severe root rot mentioned here refers to plants with intact leaves. In this case, you can behead or remove the leaves.

Screen the leaves, pick off the usable healthy leaves and use them for cuttings. For specific cutting methods, please read Huang Li’s leaf cutting method!
