When to graft osmanthus trees

When to graft osmanthus trees

1. Grafting time

Its grafting is usually carried out in early spring. The temperature in the later period is suitable, which is more conducive to healing and recovery, and whether the grafting is successful can be determined in the same year. However, some experts graft in autumn, and the survival rate is also very high.

2. Grafting method

1. Cutting grafting method: Select one-year-old new branches from a tree that has already bloomed, cut them into scions two or three centimeters long with a pair of new buds, remove the top, and cut the bottom into a wedge shape. Then you need to process the rootstock, cut the privet four or five centimeters from the ground, make a cut from the cambium and the woody part, then insert the scion and wrap it tightly with a plastic bag. It will heal in about a month.

2. Scarf grafting: Scarf grafting should be carried out in autumn. The selection and treatment of scion are the same as those for cut grafting. The side without buds should be cut into a flat surface. Then make an oblique cut on one side of the rootstock and embed the cut scion. After completion, wrap it in a plastic bag and pay attention to heat preservation in the later stage to avoid frostbite.

3. Precautions for grafting

Grafted osmanthus trees usually use Ligustrum lucidum as the rootstock, and can be grafted with silver osmanthus, golden osmanthus and other varieties. However, please note that the tree may easily break at the grafting point when it grows up, so the head must be replaced. This means that after the plant has survived, the grafted part should be allowed to grow roots again and the rootstock at the bottom should be replaced.
