How to take cuttings of bougainvillea

How to take cuttings of bougainvillea

The propagation methods of Bougainvillea include layering and cuttings. The main propagation method is cuttings, because cuttings seedlings grow fast and have a high survival rate. However, before cuttings, you must choose the right time and cuttings. After cuttings, you must also pay attention to maintenance methods to improve the survival rate.

Bougainvillea cutting time

The best time for bougainvillea cuttings is around April in spring or August in autumn each year. The temperature at this time is more suitable for the growth of bougainvillea. After cuttings, it can adapt to the environment more quickly, and you can also observe weather changes before cuttings.

Bougainvillea cutting method

1. Choose branches

When taking cuttings of Bougainvillea, it is best to choose sturdy semi-lignified branches, keep the branch length at about 10 cm, cut off all the leaves at the bottom, leaving only the two complete leaves on the top, and then cut half of each complete leaf on the top.

2. Cutting method

When cutting bougainvillea, soak the branches in potassium permanganate solution, wait for ten minutes and take them out, use sterilized scissors to cut the bottom into an oblique shape, then apply an appropriate amount of rooting powder, then insert the branches into the base soil, and press the soil on both sides of the branches with your fingers.

Rooting of bougainvillea cuttings

After the bougainvillea is grafted, it should be placed in a ventilated and warm environment for maintenance. After waiting for the plant to resume growth, you can provide scattered light so that the bougainvillea can carry out photosynthesis normally. You should also water the bougainvillea with unpolluted clean water to soak all the soil, so that it can take root faster.
