How to cultivate rhinoceros beetle

How to cultivate rhinoceros beetle

Compared with other insects, rhinoceros beetles are beautiful, fun and easy to raise. The adult insects are extremely powerful and can pull objects that are dozens of times heavier than their bodies. Many people want to raise rhinoceros beetles. Let’s talk about the breeding methods of rhinoceros beetles.

1. In which areas are rhinoceros beetles distributed?

Rhinoceros beetles are distributed in a vast area south of the Yellow River in my country, and abroad in countries such as Japan and North Korea.

Rhinoceros beetles have one generation per year and overwinter as larvae. In the Yangtze River basin, adult rhinoceros beetles usually emerge between June and July each year and climb up trees to move around. Most adults begin laying eggs in early to mid-July in places rich in humus, such as farmers' compost, sawdust from sawmills , and loose soil under trees. The eggs transform into larvae after more than ten days. The larvae are white, tender and plump. They feed on humus and generally do not harm the roots of plants. However, a small number of larvae living in sugarcane fields may harm the roots of sugarcane. The larval stage is about 9 to 10 months, and it turns into a pupa around May, and the pupal stage lasts about one month.

2. What kind of environment does the rhinoceros beetle like to live in?

Adult rhinoceros beetles mostly live in mixed woods, feeding on the sap of trees, especially elm trees. Therefore, in midsummer, wherever there are elm tree wounds with sap, you can definitely find rhinoceros beetles. It hides in the grass or loose soil during the day and comes out at night to climb trees to suck sap and mate. When the sun comes out in the morning, they climb down the trees and hide. On plants with more sap exudate, especially some trees that exude more sap the hotter the sun, even during the day, there are rhinoceros beetles crawling on the wounds of the trees to suck the sap.

3. Breeding methods of rhinoceros beetles

The rhinoceros beetle has a peculiar appearance and is of high ornamental value. In Japan, it is a rather expensive beetle that is very popular among children. To raise adult rhinoceros beetles, you can use a square glass fish tank . Fill the tank with about 1/3 soil, plant a few (3 to 4 are best) thicker branches in the soil, and transplant 1 to 2 living broad-leaved grasses. Try to create a place similar to the natural environment as much as possible, and then cover the fish tank with wire mesh to prevent the adult rhinoceros beetles from escaping.

When feeding, you can apply honey water or brown sugar water on the small tree trunk to attract the beetles to feed. You can also cut fruits such as watermelon, peaches, and melon into small pieces and stick them in the soil with toothpicks for them to eat.

You can raise male and female fish together and watch them live, mate and even lay eggs. If you only raise male rhinoceros beetles, their lifespan will be longer, and an adult can survive for 3 to 4 months.

4. How to raise rhinoceros beetle larvae?

The larvae and adults of rhinoceros beetles are completely different when raised. You can use fish tanks, flower pots and other containers to feed the larvae. Put 3/4 of humus and soft farm compost in the breeding container, separate the rhinoceros beetle larvae and bury them in the soil. The container should be covered with a glass lid, and be sure to leave a small gap to prevent air from suffocating. In order to prevent the soil from being too dry, you can frequently sprinkle some water with a watering can, but the amount of water should not be too much, and water must not accumulate.

The larvae of rhinoceros beetles feed on organic matter in humus and compost and do not need to be fed additional food. The humus and compost in the container should be replaced every half a month to keep it clean and contain sufficient nutrients. Humus in summer is prone to mold, so you should pay attention to changing it frequently to keep it fresh. The outdoor climate is cold in winter, so it is better to keep it indoors over the winter.

In this way, after a year, the larvae can grow into majestic rhinoceros beetles.
