The selection of a local corn variety is highly continuous and passive. What does this mean?

That is to say, if you planted a certain variety of corn in previous years and its yield performance has been good over the years, you generally rarely want to change to a new variety.

Under your influence, some people will also buy the variety you grow, and then the word will spread from one to two, and from two to ten. It will gradually be accepted by people, and they will want to grow this variety every year.

For example, a few years ago, I promoted a corn variety called Jinyu 118. In recent years, it has performed well in terms of yield, pests and diseases, and lodging resistance, so it is the first choice when people buy corn seeds.

According to years of experiments, this corn variety has the highest yield when the number of plants left per mu is 3,000-3,500, with an average yield of more than 850 kilograms per mu and a maximum yield of 1,200 kilograms.

We don't ask for 850 kg, nor 1,200 kg. Under normal management conditions, is it possible to achieve a yield of 750 kg per mu? Is this considered high yield?

This year I promoted another variety, called Xianya 619. When purchasing this variety, the upstream seed distributors repeatedly emphasized that this variety is not suitable for dense planting. The yield is higher when the number of plants left per mu is 2,800 to 3,000 , at more than 870 kilograms. If the sowing is too dense, there is a potential risk of lodging and baldness.

One year, we purchased a densely planted corn variety, which requires about 5,000 plants per mu, and has the highest yield, which can even reach more than 5,500 plants, and the yield per mu is also relatively high.

How many corn plants can achieve the highest yield per acre of land?

I don't know. There is no fixed value. It depends on the corn variety you choose. Some can produce high yields with 2800-3000 plants, and some can produce high yields with 5500-6000 plants .

The key to corn planting density is to determine the characteristics of the variety, rather than a uniform 3,000, 4,000, 5,000, 6,000, or 8,000 plants .

Flat corn varieties are not tolerant to dense planting, but have high yield per plant, so sparse planting is the main approach, and the appropriate density should be 3,000-3,500 plants per acre .

Compact varieties have low yield per plant, and mainly rely on dense planting to increase yield, so it is suitable for dense sowing, with 4000-5000 plants per mu . Semi-compact corn varieties should have a plant number between the two, preferably 3500-4000 plants per mu .

However, whether it is the owner or the machine planter, few people in rural areas calculate these numbers. For example, if they want to keep a certain number of corn plants, they have to accurately calculate the plant spacing and row spacing, which is almost impossible.

How to determine the planting density of the corn variety you choose

The answer is actually very simple. Most of the current corn seeds are packaged in small packages, with about 4,000 seeds in each bag, and high-density planting varieties have about 5,000 seeds.

At the same time, the outer packaging bag will be marked with the number of plants per acre that will give the highest yield, and the number of plants corresponds to the plant spacing. You can sow according to the requirements.

Then determine it based on the fertility of your own land. For thin land or land that cannot be irrigated, you can plant more densely, increasing the required sowing rate by 300-500 seeds per mu. For fertile land that is easy to water, the sowing should be sparse, according to the requirements or slightly reduced.

The number of plants left per mu I mentioned refers to the data after the seedlings survive. However, it is difficult for us to achieve one seed per seed without loss, so as to achieve the maximum number of plants per mu of this corn variety.

We can allow for a 10% loss rate, that is to say, if there are 3,000 trees per mu, the actual number of seeds planted is 3,300, and if there are 4,000 trees per mu, the actual number of seeds planted is 4,400 .

Some people say that in some places, leaving 6,000 or even 8,000 plants per acre will achieve high yield. This is true, but we cannot generalize, nor is it a basis for actual reference.

Just like how much a person should eat, there is no reference basis, it varies from person to person, it is best to eat enough. There are thousands of corn varieties, some like sparse planting, some adapt to dense planting, if the dense planting is sparse, the cobs are large but the number is small, the yield may not be high.

If you plant too densely when you should plant too sparsely, the stems will be small, even fall over, or become bald, and the yield will not reach the best. You can only decide based on the variety. 3,000 plants are also high yields, and even 2,800 plants can reach the best.

Summarize

Whether corn has high yield depends on density, fertilizer and water, and pest control. Only with reasonable density, sufficient fertilizer and water, and good pest control, it is difficult not to have high yield.

Don't just think about how to increase the density to improve the yield. Maybe you have put up screens, but the air is not airtight, and the corn cobs are half a foot long, with few grains and seeds and bald heads, and you will regret it later.
