How and when to plant white radish

How and when to plant white radish

White radish planting time

When the temperature is suitable, white radish can be planted in some areas, such as the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, in February and March, and in North China and other areas, it can be planted in April and May. Radish planting needs to be combined with local temperature changes. It is difficult for seedlings to emerge evenly when the temperature is low.

In most areas, summer radishes are generally soaked and sown in May and June. Sowing too late will cause the radishes to grow too fast and become hollow. Especially in the late summer, the high temperature will cause the radishes to bolt early if not managed properly, and there will be more diseases and pests.

Planting radishes in spring

White radish is sown in March and April and harvested from early May to June. The growing period is generally 25-60 days. The suitable germination temperature is 2-3 degrees. The seedling stage can withstand temperatures of 25°C and can also withstand temperatures as low as minus 3°C. The suitable growth temperature for stems and leaves is 15-20 degrees, and the suitable growth temperature for fleshy roots is 18-20 degrees.

Planting white radish in summer

White radish can be sown in summer from May to June and harvested in July to August. If sown too early, it is easy to sprout. High air humidity can improve the quality, but do not water excessively. Uneven water supply will easily cause the fleshy roots to crack.

Planting white radish in autumn

The planting time of autumn white radish is generally from mid-July to mid-August, and the harvest time is from the end of October to mid-November. The taste and quality of autumn radish are better than radishes sown in other seasons.

Planting white radish in winter

The sowing period for winter radish is generally in early to mid-November. If sowing is too late, low temperatures will lead to insufficient leaf growth and reduced yields. Radishes are not very demanding on the soil, but are suitable for planting in sandy loam with deep, loose soil and good water and fertilizer retention properties.

How to plant white radish

1. Land preparation

White radish is suitable for growing in loose and fertile soil. The land should be prepared in advance and the depth should be kept at 30 cm. At the same time, weeds should be removed, and then sufficient base fertilizer should be applied. Use decomposed farmyard manure and diammonium phosphate or compound fertilizer to apply to the field and disinfect it.

2. Planting

The suitable time for sowing is between June 25th and July 5th. Sow by spot sowing, sow about 5 seeds in each hole, and cover them with a 2 cm layer of fine soil to prevent the seeds from drying out and affecting germination.

3. Thinning

After the white radish sprouts 3 true leaves, it can be thinned out, leaving 2 seedlings in each hole. When the 5th true leaf sprouts, the second thinning is carried out, leaving 1 seedling in each hole. At the same time, combine it with inter-tillage to promote root growth and loosen the soil.

4. Topdressing fertilizer and water

After the seedlings break through the soil, they can be watered thoroughly once, and then watered again during the root expansion period. If the base fertilizer is insufficient, topdressing can be applied in time, or foliar fertilizers such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate can be sprayed to increase yield.

5. Pest and disease control

In order to grow healthy and pollution-free white radish, it is necessary to control the use of pesticides. You can deep plow the soil to reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests. You can also lure and kill pests. If conditions permit, you can set up insect-proof nets to protect natural enemies and let them catch pests. If you must use pesticides, it is recommended to use low-toxic, low-residue pesticides.
