How to plant roses so that they can survive and grow well (potted rose cultivation methods and techniques)

Chinese rose is a kind of flower of the genus Rosa, native to China, with a long history of cultivation. After a long period of selection and improvement, it has developed into thousands of varieties today, especially the European garden rose, which has high ornamental value.

In fact, roses are not that difficult to grow. Roses are light-loving plants. They need a warm climate, plenty of sunshine, and at least five hours of sunlight a day. They need good air circulation and an open environment. They can be planted in the ground or in potted plants on the balcony. So how can you grow roses well?

1. Seedling selection

To grow roses well, we must choose healthy and vigorous seedlings, which is the basis. How to judge, first of all, the root system must be strong and developed, and secondly, the plant shape must be full and have many branches, which is the key.

2. Cultivation medium

Here are two ways of planting:

The first type of ground planting : roses prefer loose, breathable and slightly acidic soil. As long as it is not planted in clay or alkaline soil, ordinary garden soil can be used for ground planting.

The second type of potted plants , due to the limitation of pot size, have higher requirements for potting soil. The pot should have good water permeability and air permeability, and the cultivation medium should be loose and breathable.

For general home balcony potted plants, you can choose to mix coarse and fine coconut coir with garden soil, which is lightweight and relatively inexpensive. The commonly used ratio is 0.5:1:1 .

Of course, you can also add some peat soil or perlite, which is very good for retaining water and fertilizer, and then plant it in a pot .

3. Water and fertilizer management

Rose is a relatively drought-resistant plant, but you must grasp this principle: don't water it unless it's dry, and water it thoroughly if it's dry.

This is where many flower lovers are most likely to go wrong with their maintenance. They often over-water, which leads to root waterlogging and plant death. There are also two management methods here: ground planting and potted plant maintenance.

Roses planted in the ground can be managed with plenty of water and fertilizer. As long as the ground is not waterlogged and water is not accumulated, and it is given sufficient water and fertilizer, it will grow quickly and grow into a large crown. Compared with potted plants, it is much simpler to manage, and it takes shape quickly and has a quick effect .

Potted roses are not suitable for everyone. For balcony parties, potted roses are also a good choice. The principle of watering must be mastered. If it is not dry, do not water. If it is dry, water thoroughly. Fertilization should be based on the principle of thin fertilizer and frequent application .

4. Disease prevention

Rose is also commonly known as "medicine jar" and needs to be sprayed with fungicides and insecticides regularly to prevent or treat diseases and pests, especially the most common diseases and pests of roses.

Diseases: Powdery mildew and black spot

Medication : For prevention, use broad-spectrum fungicides, such as mancozeb and propineb, and for treatment, use fenpropimorph.

How to use : Foliar spray

Pests: aphids, spider mites

Medication : Aphids can be easily killed with imidacloprid or other insecticides. Red spider mites are the most difficult to deal with and can be killed with acaricides such as Jinmanzhi, etoxazole, and Acaricide.

How to use : For prevention, you can apply it once every ten days or so. For treatment during the outbreak period, especially for red spider mites, it is recommended to spray pesticides every 3 days in rotation until they are under control.

5. Pruning branches to control plant shape

Rose is a plant that is resistant to pruning and requires regular branch care to promote its growth and sprout new branches. It is also a basic requirement to ensure its continuous flowering.

Pruning principles : remove weak branches, crossed branches, and inward-facing branches to ensure the permeability between rose branches while reducing the occurrence of diseases and pests.
