So how do you grow strawberries?

1. Choose good varieties

There are many varieties of strawberries, and suitable varieties should be selected according to local climatic conditions. The climate in Xinyang is suitable for growing late-maturing, high-yielding, disease-resistant, heat-resistant and cold-resistant varieties, such as European Four Seasons Red, Sweet Charlie, and Frandi.

2. Seedling management

Seedling cultivation is a key step in strawberry cultivation, which affects the health of the seedlings and future yield. Seedling raising methods include open-air planting and greenhouse planting, and you need to choose a location with fertile soil, good drainage and sufficient light. Establish nurseries, avoid continuous cropping, and use fully decomposed farmyard manure and compound fertilizer to improve soil fertility. Pay attention to shading and cooling to promote flower bud differentiation.

3. Planting

The planting time is determined according to the local climate. In Xinyang City, it is generally from late April to early May. Select healthy seedlings for planting and control the planting density, with plant spacing of 16 to 20 cm and row spacing of 30 to 35 cm. Pay attention to the weather when transplanting, avoid direct sunlight, plant at a depth of 7 to 10 cm, and water the plants in time to ensure they take root.

4. Field management

Management of flowers, fruits, branches and leaves: Provide sufficient water and nutrients during the period of vigorous development of flowers and fruits, thin out flowers and fruits, remove excess leaves, and ensure effective supply of nutrients.

Water and fertilizer management: Adjust the irrigation amount and time according to the growth of strawberries, and increase the frequency of watering in summer. Base fertilizer is applied during land preparation, topdressing is applied during the growing period, the use of potassium fertilizer and phosphorus fertilizer is increased, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are applied during the flowering period, and topdressing is mainly nitrogen fertilizer, and thin fertilizer is applied frequently.

Hormone regulation: Gibberellic acid is used in the early stage of seedling cultivation to promote the emergence of runners, and paclobutrazol is used in the later stage of seedling cultivation to inhibit the emergence of runners and promote flower bud differentiation.

Pest and disease control: Take agricultural, physical and biological control measures to improve the strawberry's resistance to diseases and pests. When there are serious diseases and pests, deal with the diseased plants in a timely manner, use pesticides scientifically, control the spread of diseases and pests, and ensure the quality of strawberries.
