What kind of stem is used to graft the lollipop rose (rose grafting lollipop tutorial)

How to graft lollipop roses onto roses with very thin rootstocks? Many people may have this question. Today, I also grafted some rose branches on the mountain and prepared to use them to graft lollipop roses. I also encountered the same problem you asked.

The stems I cut are relatively thin. There is no other way. I couldn't find thick rose stems on the mountain, so I had to make do with these thin ones.

How to choose scion when the rootstock is relatively thin

When we graft lollipop roses, we need to choose the scion branches correctly. For thinner rootstocks like this one, it is recommended not to choose large rose varieties, such as Lonza Gem, because its branches grow fast .

And it is relatively thin. After the grafting is completed, the rootstock is relatively thin and cannot bear it at all. So we can choose some small rose varieties, such as Hide and Seek Rose, Super Micro, Juice Balcony, Canary, etc. The branches of these roses are not very large, and the crown width in the later stage is not large, which is more suitable.

Grafting method of lollipop rose

What method should we choose when grafting lollipop roses? Now that it is the beginning of autumn, the general methods can be used, such as bud grafting, bark grafting, double tongue grafting, cleft grafting, etc.

Because the rootstock is relatively thin, it is best to choose chip budding or T-budding. The interface is smaller, it saves more scion, the operation is simpler, and most importantly, the survival rate is higher.

We can also use bark grafting , because when grafting lollipop roses, for the sake of the crown width in the later stage, it is best to graft two scions.

If you use bark grafting to graft two scion branches, the scion branches should not be too thick, but slightly thinner. If you are grafting ultra-fine branches, it will be more appropriate.

Maintenance of lollipop rose after grafting

Grafting is actually very simple. You may think it is very simple for others to do it, but it is not that easy for you to do it yourself. I wonder if you have the same feeling?

That is because many people have high expectations but low skills, and fail to pay attention to some details of the operation, which directly leads to grafting failure. Maintenance after grafting is also very important, and any carelessness will lead to a waste of effort.

(1) After grafting, it is best not to expose the graft to direct sunlight, because the graft has not yet formed an integral part with the rootstock and may dry out if exposed to the sun. It is best to place it in a ventilated and cool place for maintenance, or in a place with scattered light.

(2) The interface should not be exposed to water. If it is exposed to water, it will turn black and cause grafting failure. If it is placed outdoors, it is best to cover it with a plastic bag.

(3) In order to obtain a fuller crown, the grafted buds can be topped after they emerge to promote the growth of side buds.

(4) Because the rootstock is relatively thin, you need to use a rope to fix the rootstock rose, or tie a stick and insert the stick into the soil to ensure that the rootstock will not be bent by the scion growing too large or blown away by the wind.

[Summary] As long as you pay attention to these points, very thin rootstock roses can also be grafted into lollipop roses, but they require special care. After grafting, the rootstock will grow thicker. As long as the fertilizer and water are appropriate, the ugly duckling will become a white swan.
