How to propagate Lilium

How to propagate Lilium

Seed propagation of Lilium lily

Seed propagation of Fritillaria lily is a form of sexual propagation, usually used in breeding.

Seed propagation method

The seeds are harvested in autumn and stored until they can be sown in the spring of the following year.

It will germinate about a week after sowing. During the germination and growth into seedlings, pay attention to proper shade and avoid direct sunlight to avoid burning the seedlings. After autumn, small bulbs will grow. At this time, you can dig out the bulbs and plant them in different pots.

After this kind of seed propagation, the flowering time of each pot of Fritillaria is different. Some will bloom in one year, while others will bloom after three years of cultivation, so this method is not suitable for home cultivation.

Cutting propagation of Lilium lily

The cutting propagation of Fritillary Lily is to use scale cuttings.

First, dig out the bulbs in autumn and break off the thick scales on the old bulbs, but make sure the bulbs are still attached with the stem disk.

The second step is to plant the broken bulbs into a flowerpot filled with river sand. Keep the soil in the pot moist so that roots will grow after a month.

Finally, after rooting, keep the soil in the pot from being too moist in winter and pay attention to keeping warm. Wait until the spring of the second year, small bulbs will grow at the bottom of the scales. At this time, you can separate the small bulbs, plant them in the pot, and take good care of them.

Propagation of Lilium lily by dividing its beads

Division of Fritillaria is a less commonly used method of propagation.

When dividing the plant, just remove the buds that grow from the axils of the above-ground stems and then cultivate them carefully.

This method of division propagation is suitable for a few species of Fritillaria lily, Scutellaria japonensis, etc.
